I asking my workers to take a welding cert test with 6010, but I only have 6011 to practice with. Other than differences which matter in actual production welds, are there any differencew is learning and practing for  a welder 6G test.? If they practice with 6011 and never had used 6010 is there any effect on learning and certying to a 6G vise 6011?                                                                                                                                  Would it be okay to have them pratice with 6011 knowing the 6G coupon is to be welded with 6010 and considering they never used 6010 before.....
Reply:Just buy the right stuff.  It's going to be used anyway.  Why would you have them cert'd on something you don't use?
Reply:Better yet get the exact brand of electrodes to be used in the test.  Tests cost money.  It is worth giving people the best chances to do it right.  No need to add to the unsettled nerves guys get from testing.
Reply:You do have a DC machine right? 6010 will not run on AC. The 2 rods are simular but a slightly different. Make sure you have a DC machine and buy a box  of 6010 and let him run some before the test.Tough as nails and damn near as smart

Reply:I have about 2,000 lbs of 6011 and only a few of workers to certify. I am trying to use up the 6011 and save money. The machines are dc/ac. They have plenty of material and there is no time limit the amount of pratice they will receive, and of course they will be have a certified welder to train them. The welders have experience welding with a backing ring and 7018 root, or open butt with 70S-2. The state license requires use of 6010 for the cert test root, but 6011 is on we have in stock and if an open root pass is ever welded here it will probably be 6011 due to company requirements. If it is pertinent to pratice with 6011 vise 6010 please provide technical reasons and details? Is it possible that they pratice majorly with 6011 and use up all the rod as possible be proficient with 6011 and then lay a few beads with 6010 and quickly pick up on any differences?

Reply:6011 and 6010 root passes run considerably different IMO.  You could argue that they're close enough for fill passes. From a technical standpoint, it gets blurry.  Some codes consider polarity to be an essential variable, others like D1.1 do not.  You can run the same configuration per AWS D1.1 with 6010 or 6011, and be qualified to weld with either as they are both F3 electrodes.
Reply:from my experience, If you can run one well you should be able to run the other.  Iwould practice with the 6011 and then have them do a week or so practice with 6010.  a 50lb tin of 6010 only cost you $100 or so.  if they can't run decent roots with the 50lb or 6010 then they need to practice alot more.  roots are more set up and puddle control than it is the electrode used.  the guys that weld pipe in the shops I have been in most can lay a root with any rod you hand them.  it is the few who are inexperienced that blame the rod.  so have them practice with the 6011s and finish off with a tin of 6010.after man runs 200 lbs of 6011 roots he ought to be able to run a root pass with 6010 after a couple adjustments.
