Through some hilarious bartering, my family has acquired a fabrication shop that makes restaurant shelving and tables via bending, welding, and finishing thin-gauge stainless steel sheet and square tube (304 SS, thicknesses ranging from .8mm-2.0mm) .I'm a welding novice, but I can tell right off the bat that the welding done in the shop is not consistent.Welders are not using ANY fixtures or jigs (all free-hand using carpenter levels). Due to the thicknesses involved, TIG is employed w/ Argon as a sheathing gas. As far as I can tell, though, none of the welders are using foot controls or heat sinks, so there is some pretty gnarly HAZs and warping going on.First thing I want to do is get an Acorn table and employ some proper clamps. However, I'm worried that a grey iron platen will induce rust and carbon contamination on the SS workpieces. Is there a non-reflective coating or workaround (apart from bead blasting/additional finishing on the work-piece) to avoid this?
Reply:Yes, the iron table will contaminate the stainless. I'd recommend you make a stainless table.Ian TannerKawasaki KX450 and many other fine tools
Reply:Have a 1/8" stainless sheet with square holes made up to act as a table cover.  Just screw it down in a few places, should be all good.Buy American, or don't whine when you end up on the bread line.

Reply:For what you will be fabricating a Acorn will do just fine..I used one that was 12 feet long and 8 feet wide when I did military stainless stuff and there were no issues..9 times out of 10 the platen was just for TACKING IN PLACE...Just like what you need it for...No issues just go for it....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thanks for the info!  Now I've got to transport the dang table...

Reply:You have to prevent contamination from the acorn table.  When I worked on larger aluminum fabrications we laid down sheets of 1/4 inch plywood then clamped the aluminum to the ply.  We used strips of plywood under the clamping bars and arranged the butt joints to be over gaps in the plywood.  It is a time consuming and cumbersome way to do it bet it does work.   Beside full sheets of ply we had an endless supply of plywood strips about four inches wide.   My feeling is that pedal controls and more attention to reducing heat input would do more to fight distortion.  Many people weld that kind of stainless with way too much heat.  The other thing is they try to get away from using backing gas on joints.

Some of us on this forum talk like we are experts, some of us may be experts, but none of us can actually see your shop.
Reply:Hey turkishness,It might be helpful if you post your location in your profile. And we all like pictures, so post some pictures and I believe you will get a lot of help. It sounds like you are trying to improve the business and your quality of the products. That is a good goal.Burt _____________________Miller Syncrowave 250Millermatic 211Miller 375 Plasma Cutter Hobart Handler 12010FtDrillBit.com
Reply:No at the company I work at we manufacture food grade stainless steel cheese processing equipment and we use them all the time. Keep rust off the table and try not to slide the stainless piece around. This will scratch the stainless and the iron embedded in the scratch will make it rust.Lincoln Ranger 250 GXTLN-25Lincoln Magnum SG and ModuleAirco HF BoxMiller 304 XMT CC/CVMiller 60 Series FeederMiller Syncrowave 250O/A SetupIt's a dog eat dog world and i'm wearing milkbone underwear
