Well, first night of welding class last night. It was AWESOME. It's been a few months since I've welded, and longer since I've used a stick welder, but I was still able to consistently tap-start the 6010s we're using. Question: Is it okay to let the rod ride on the flux coating as you weld? Or should I be holding the rod off the metal. I tried both ways, and the only problem I had with dragging it was I couldn't see anything. Most of the light from the arc disappeared and I couldn't tell where I was going. (Running shade 9 on my helmet, later turned it up to 10)Any tips for running this rod?thanks!
Reply:what i know about this rod is that it is for dc welding, and it is deep penetrating, this rod in my opinion shouldnt be used as a contact rod, this rod defenetly shouldnt be used for ac welding though.
Reply:Congratulations on your welding class. This is a great resource. Print it out and hang it up. Their welders always have great charts. http://www.millerwelds.com/education...ps/stick_tips/John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:I use this stick in school aswell. My teacher told us to keep it 1/8th inches away from the material when you are welding.
Reply:yeah thats about the right lenth
Reply:That sounds good. I remember my high school shop teacher telling us to use the width of the metal part of the rod as a guesstimate. That's about how far away I was holding it when I didn't drag it. How wide should the bead end up being?
Reply:well that depends, how thick is the metal
Reply:3/8 or 1/2" plate.
Reply:id say about 3/4 on 3/8 and 1 " on 1/2 aproxx.
Reply:A rule of thumb I use is to not exceed 1-1/2 times the diameter of the rod... with regard to the width of the bead. If you go too wide what will happen especially with a vertical up bead, is you will have heavy build up on the edges and and less in the middle. This will leave the bead with a concave profile. You'll also see this more with a 7018 rod than a 6011 or 10._________________Chris
Reply:6010 should have a bit of an arc length.  I'm supprised you were even able to drag it without it sticking.  7018 drags ok, especially the thicker rods like 3/16ths inch.   7018 works best with a very short arc length.
Reply:I read 6013 is ok to drag, but not the others discussed here.Various GrindersVictor Journeyman torch200cf Acet. 250cf oxygenLincoln 175 plus/alpha2 gunLincoln v205t tigLincoln 350mpEsab 650 plasmaWhen you can get up in the morning, Its a good day.Live each day like its your last.
Reply:The classic, big daddy drag rod is 7024, and 7014 is the little brother.  The coatings are thick and the metal core burns back up inside the coating tip, giving the perfect arc length when dragged on the base metal.  As I recall, 6013 and 7018 work well when dragged, touchier that 7024/7014.I agree with 76GMC1500.
