Here is a bbq I just built for a customer.  It's an old air compressor tank.  There is a bit of a twist to this one.  Because of the limited room under the s.s. grill, I decided to try a new design which funnels the air flow under the plate which holds the wood.. Dunno if it will work, but it looks kinda cool. You can see I ran the contour of the tank with the s.s. round stock, then I bent all the pieces up and spaced them apart with 5/16" nuts which works out to 3/4" on center. Now that customers are checking out my aluminum bbq in the shop, they are hot for my grills.  I'm currently making a 28" x 72" one out of s.s.. That's over 200 bucks in round stock alone.. They are time consuming to make. The plate is 10gauge that was cnc plasma'd, then broke on our break press.  I just eyeballed it, and stomped on it till it came out to the right shape. Reply:Oh yeah, he is going to clean it up, paint it and finish the top with some kind of hard wood.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
Reply:Nice! it will look good finished. This was actually one of my first projects, I think it turned out pretty good for a dummy.
Reply:Brainfarth-  Does the wood tray sit directly on top of the vanes you welded to the bottom of the tank? The vanes ought to help until they get filled with ashes.  Getting air to BBQ's is always a problem.I'd like to get around to building one someday.  I thought I'd cut a full length slot underneath, then mount a windproof ash/cinder box under the slot, air flow would be controled by a a damper in the flue and adjustable round thingies on the lid."Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
Reply:Yeah, it's a pretty close fit.  I know it will fill pretty fast, so he'll have to clean it every time he wants to use it.  But since he'll be using wood, it shouldn't fill that fast.  A nice long damper would be nice.  That would be great, almost instant control of your coals.  This one only has a 2" hole in the bottom from where the original air fitting was.  I fabbed up a swing lid to cover it.  We're still not 100% done with it.  He took some pipes with him to machine for the stacks.  He's going to put vertical slots in them and fab another pipe with the same slots to fit inside the mounted one.  It will work similar to a ball valve.  Yet again, another first for me.Common sense in an uncommon degree is what the world calls wisdom.
