Neighbour asked me to weld some cooler studs back on his John Deere tranny cover. The propshaft from the engine enters the transmission through a propshaft. The bolts in the flanges had been broken and the propshaft slammed the cooler lines and sockets from the cast aluminium cover. One socket was split, the other smashed and the third was completely ripped out. The ally was quite grey and I told him I didn't trust it to be reliable after welding. Next to that I didn't have much time, the tractor had to be used again soon and he could have a new cover the other day I advised him to take his loss and get a new cover.Today he told me he had it welded by some other guy and it looked great, but all studs broke on the welds this afternoon.Glad I didn't weld it and he took the decision by himselves. I can have the cover now to experiment with temperatures, fillers and waveforms for future purpose. |
