Well, I finally got started. This is my first project after not doing anything for 20 years. This is a 1993 Land Rover, Range Rover Long Wheel Base. I am doing front and rear bumpers, skid plates, and rock sliders. Started with the front bumper.Using a Millermatic 250, a plasma cutter, and old Lincoln stick welder in a friends shop.Spent the first day cussing about my crappy welds witht he MIG. Tried everything, except turning on the gas!! After that was corrected, and I ground out all the crappy welds, and redid them with stick or MIG, things went better!Bumper was designed to allow minimum front approach angle and provide basis for mounting things like antennas on.Start with a $1700 Land Rover - remove the remains of the factory front bumper.Build baces back to frame that eliminate any possibility of weld failure - 1/4" x 4" plate attached to frame with 2 grade 8 3/8" and 1 3/4" grade 8 bolts. Use appropriate size beer can, snuff can, or other custom template available!Weld 2 plates together and relearn lesson on welding lap joints. Weld and grind seams all the way around.Measure braces and drill to attach to frame. Attach and square/level up and box in with 1/4 x 4 flate plate. Add 3/16x2x2 cross braces. To be continued!Rob PageMiller Bobcat 250Lincoln SP170-T

Reply:Final product - with redone welds. Not the best welding, but i will get better with you guys helping!!!Input appreciated. Rear bumper and rear rock sliders next.RobRob PageMiller Bobcat 250Lincoln SP170-T
Reply:I usually just check in and look at the pretty pictures, so its my first post. But I got to tell ya man, I dig that bumper/winch mount. I love the look of Range Rovers, good job.
Reply:I forgot to post -In use - Check the articulation and front approach angle. 2" body lift coming to help that "wheels stuffing to the fender liners" issue. I will fab that lift myself.Rob PageMiller Bobcat 250Lincoln SP170-T
Reply:That is a kick-*** truck if you can afford to keep them running. Nothing can touch that thing.
Reply:No different than my International Harvesters. I have friends at a dealer (parts dept and lead tech) that help point me in the right direction when something is stumping me and there is awesome international and US forum support on them. An entire new engine can be had new for under $2k, but you can rebuild them for a few hundred if you have the time and ability. I bought an entire axle assembly, housing, gears, ABS Sensors, brakes, rotors, everything, from a wrecking yard for $200 delivered to me. Transfer case delivered to me - $150.Fuel pump - use a generic, $80. Injector - 87-93 Ford Mustang - It's all Bosch. And on and on. Not as expensive as it seems. And last, but not least, EVERYONE has a Jeep. It's not often you find IHC Scouts and Land Rovers running together! Rob PageMiller Bobcat 250Lincoln SP170-T
Reply:A couple wedge pieces from the winch mount to the edge of the bumper, angled back toward the running gear will help clean things up rather nicely. Will also build strength to the whole bumper.MarkI haven't always been a nurse........Craftsman 12"x36" LatheEnco G-30B MillHobart Handler 175Lincoln WeldandPower 225 AC/DC G-7 CV/CCAdd a Foot Pedal to a Harbor Freight Chicago Electric 165A DC TIG PapaLion's Gate Build
Reply:Markball2, I don't quite follow what you are suggesting. Something like an ARB Bull Bar? Or a gusset piece from the frame boxes out toward the wing tip?RobRob PageMiller Bobcat 250Lincoln SP170-T
Reply:I built some sliders for a friend of mine a few years ago for the sides of his toyo. He posted it on the toyo site a few years ago. They really worked well. He installed them after he came down on a stump square under the extended section of his cab, leaving damage visible from the outside and the floor pan buckled. Fairly new truck too.Esab Migmaster 250Lincoln SA 200Lincoln Ranger 8Smith Oxy Fuel setupEverlast PowerPlasma 80Everlast Power iMIG 160Everlast Power iMIG 205 Everlast Power iMIG 140EEverlast PowerARC 300Everlast PowerARC 140STEverlast PowerTIG 255EXT |
