My trailer is a 7' x 4' and is my only method of getting steel from the suppliers a short distance away. The biggest problem I find is when I tie 20' lengths to my racks I have about 7' hanging off both ends, which gets kinda floppy. My old method of transporting them was to first strap an old wooden plank to my racks, then strap the long lengths of metal to that. That worked OK, but was fiddly. So my first project today on my new welder (insurance paid up on my burglery claim and all my gear is sparkling), was to make an extension for my rack that is easily removed, stored and is sturdy.I am pleased as punch with my results. I have gained and extra 4' at each end of my trailer, giving me a total of 15' fully supported rack, with only a couple of feet overhang on each end.I only carry thin light stuff, but this would manage a lot heavier than i need. It takes about 10 seconds to put each end on, and no fasteners are needed. It simply hooks over the end of the bar on my existing rack, and a strut with a bolt welded on the end slots into a hole drilled lower down on my railer door. The weight of the rack and design keeps it all in place. All I have to do is tie my load on and away I go. When not in use it folds up for easy convenient storage in my shed and only ways a few pounds.I should have thought of this years ago, as it is a useful little addition to my trailer.
Reply:Good to see you got your new welder. Looks like a bit of an upgrade from the old. I think i remember it being a 200 or 210amp unit.Maybe you could weld something up to improve the security on your garage to protect your new stuff.
Reply:Yeah, the other was a WIA 210s, but as they no longer make them this is the closest welder. It's a 256 amp and is a little ripper !! She welds heaps better than the old model, so in a way the thieves have done me a favor, not that I would want to be burgled again. Our house has a sale contract on it, so soon as we settle in to our new digs I am going to make sure that even a safe cracker won't get into my shed.
Reply:Smart mod. You could put a permanent red flag on the rear-most piece.
