I came across a video of a pipe cutting technique, that I have not seen before. Can anyone here tell me what the hell is going on in this video?http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=31d_1314296281
Reply:Rough cutting a 36" crude oil pipeline with a hand torch - in the process of an upgrade - - - the "hard way"   Probably overseas I imagine.I can see 2 pretty good size side-booms with lowering-in belts around the pipe meaning this ain't some terrorist strike (they wouldn't worry about scratching the dope  ).I'd say the hoe dug up the line, the booms lifted it out of the ditch, then the dummy in the rag hood cut it off  ----  which everyone there knew was going to be a bad idea.    I say this because the hoe is turned backwards and the camera man was a fair distance away.  I think I can assume they didn't run any cleaning pigs to remove any residual crude oil before this upgrade began.     Nor do I see any evidence of them having air movers on the lines either.  haha  Just - cut her off man and let her blow!!!!!! Just remember........  Not all of use have it made.  Some hast to take chances like this in order to make a living in this modern day world.  This vid proves it.  Someone made the $$, with others took the chances for the crumbs.  But I must admit - that would be fun.... I'd try it I think  Although it might not look like it - - - they do know what they're doing.  This ain't their first time doing this.He didn't cut all they way across the pipe because that might of got him burned up if it had suddenly came into and the fire have come up onto him.  He left enough meat uncut in the top so he could get safely away from it - then the booms broke the rest of the uncut pipe out by moving the pipes up and/or down.  By the looks of the cut after it came apart I'd say that top was in a pretty good strain anyway. hahaThey've done this before I have no doubt.  lolGood luck manLaterLast edited by slowhand; 08-25-2011 at 08:59 PM.

Reply:Looks like the pipe was being cut with oxy-fuel  while being purged with CO2. The purge was mostly to fill the air with a familiar aroma that reminds the crew to be careful, so that soon they could be sitting at the bar, enjoying a drink of CO2 in their Scotch-N-Soda.   A side benefit of the clouds of purge gas was that the cut didn't flare until the workman was clear, the purge stopped, and the pipe separated.Good LuckLast edited by denrep; 08-25-2011 at 10:00 PM.
Reply:Damn, thanks for the answer. I sure wouldn't want a job where I have to run to a safe spot. Crazy stuff right there.
