Hey guys, i am wondering if anyone one has more tricks to bring old Rods back to life. I've tried the oven, (1, 2, and 5 hours)I've tried letting it heat up on the welder by keeping it in direct contact with the base metal..Any other ideas? These 6011 just dont run good!   -Clarke 130EN-Miller MaxStar 150STL-Miller Elite 29' Roadster
Reply:Don't know any tricks myself. Except pick up some new rod. They are not that expensive.Patriot Performance AutoLincoln Power Mig 255CLincoln AC-225 StickVictor Journeyman O/AQuincy QT-5 Compressor
Reply:6011 doesn't particularly go bad on the shelf. Of the wie rusts under the flux, toss it. If the flux drops off, toss it. DON'T cook it. It isn't real tolerant (nor is 6010 o any other celucitic) of being cooked. A small bit of moisture is normal for the flux. Not wet, but whatever it picks up from the air.Try knocking the flucx off a rod, top to bottom, and look at the wire. Any significant corrosion is bad. If it is clean, the flux may be contaminated, the material may be dirty, or you may need to adjust parameters. If it isn't anything obvious, toss it. Wire is cheaper than the time and trouble of dealing with crap.
Reply:Yea, i'm going to buy some new rods tomorrow to use for now, i have some 7014s coming in on monday. Thanks for the tips guys!-Clarke 130EN-Miller MaxStar 150STL-Miller Elite 29' Roadster
Reply:How many pounds are we talking about that you would go to all that trouble to fix it?  3 hours looks a little bit like when I weld in windy conditions because I am being pushed.  The 5 hrs looks a little fast in the middle but they both look pretty even.  Of course, I am no professional.
Reply:Well.. i am no pro either, have only been doing this for a VERY short about of time.I think the bad welds are due to me and the old rods...... because i am sure a pro can make anything look good.I have a good half of a package left that i was trying to save, but oh well...-Clarke 130EN-Miller MaxStar 150STL-Miller Elite 29' Roadster
Reply:If the flux is entact it is useable.  In some cases cellulose rods benefit from more moisture in the flux.  Wet one rod and see if it works any better.  If you are shopping for E 6011 and you are using an AC welder you might look for E 6011 P  This rod has extra potassium to help stabilize the arc making it easier on AC.  By the way for a beginner those beads are not that bad.
Reply:Thanks Lo, I'm going to go and buy new Rods today, the 7014 or 7018 as i heard they're pretty good.-Clarke 130EN-Miller MaxStar 150STL-Miller Elite 29' Roadster
Reply:I've never tried it but my old boss who is a hell of a stick welder said you can dip them in water then bake them.  He was refering to the red 5p but maybe it will work on similar rods.  I know it sounds whacky but I trust his knowledge.
Reply:Thanks for the Tip, I'll try that next time.-Clarke 130EN-Miller MaxStar 150STL-Miller Elite 29' Roadster
