Last night I was fabricating a guard for a floor conveyor chain drive out of 1/16" hot rolled steel. I was using the tig to tack it all up which worked ok, but when I started joining the seams i noticed some sparks and porosity in the welds. I ended up just welding it up with some 1/16" 6013 at about 30A, wich seemed to work good for my purposes. How much do you have to clean mild steel in order to get a good weld. I usually do sanitary stainless and I clean that up nice, but this was about 10' of seam and i was being a little lazy. I don't care to clean something like this spotless in order to use the Tig, but the welds sure look nicer. Also all I had was 316 filler so I was using that to fill in the small gaps.
Reply:The scale surface of hot rolled steel will tend to give you the sparks and porosity in TIG welding. Prepare the metal like your "sanitary stainless" and it will generally weld like sanitary stainless.
Reply:Big mistake I see with hot rolled, especially when people are doing closed butt joints, is that they'll grind the top and bottom to bright metal, but neglect to clean the edges, especially on thin material. With all the mill scale/dirt and grime, you're guaranteed a mini fireworks show every time. |
