Im trying to weld some expanded mesh and i keep burning it up. Im using a lincoln 135 flux core. Im welding on B with 1.5 for wire speed. Tried others, but not getting a good result. Anybody have a recomendation. Im welding the material to 1/8in angle, just trying to tack it there.
Reply:Point the wire at the angle iron first, then roll it over to the mesh. Your basically tacking in place.MM 175 w/ spoolgun
Reply:Lay a steel washer on the mesh and plug weld thru the hole, it will hold the mesh in place better...BobBob WrightSalem, Ohio  Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun
Reply:As mribieo mentions.... you want to concentrate your arc on the base material and WASH the puddle into the expanded metal._________________Chris

Reply:Also, welded the the unions not the individual wire.  There is more metal at the unions.
Reply:yup, and when you've done it enough you can turn your welder up to 25v and zip right down it with your eyes closed and every tack is holding.  About a 1/2 second a tack will do it.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:Dang, where were you guys about a week ago?  I managed to DESTROY about $15 worth of expanded sheet before I figured that one out.  $15 is a cheap lesson to learn though!ThermalArc 185MillerMatic 180 w/ AutosetVictor Cutskill Oxy/AcetyleneThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 38and spite!

Reply:It's funny this came up this week. I just got done building a big rolling cart for our flat stock. I cut it so that the intersections were what I was welding on, started each weld on the schedule 80 pipe it was getting tacked to, and just rolled over it like I was welding over a tack or a start/stop. Worked great!John Originally Posted by WeldingWookie i sure would hope soo since he was tryin it 4 years ago
