Friend of mine has a pit that is 1 inch think smoker that he wants to weld on some legs to it. We had to find half inch pipe to be able to make legs. I was planning to make T and welding on but i think it will be to heavy any suggestions on type of legs and what Stick do i need to use. I have a Lincoin stick welder.
Reply:this thread sucks with out pictures. lol really might helpWhat model of welder? 7014 would work, with the welders I have.
Reply:Any idea of the total weight these legs are going to have to support?  It doesn't take much 1" material to add up fast. Half inch pipe doesn't sound like it will be up to the task maybe?"The things that will destroy America are prosperity at any price, peace at any price, safety first instead of duty first, the love of soft living and the get rich quick theory of life." -Theodore Roosevelt

Reply:Sorry the pit weighs about 3500# but I can set the firebox on the trailer to help with weight. I wanted thicker pipe for it too but he is trying to do this with free material from his friends. I think the tubing is 5" or 6" 1/2"walls. I might have to do V legs on this one. He is way over his head on this one. He also wants to use a 15' flatbed trailer with 7000# axle buy the framing is done with 1/4" angle. Just too many variables that spell failure.
Reply:I just yesterday smoked a big salmon in my Lil-Chief  smoker that weighs a total of 3 pounds. I am aghast at the size of this smoker that weighs about double the weight of my tractor and woodpile combined.I think everyone misunderstood the 1/2" supports.
Reply:maybe it's an optical illusion but that sure doesn't look 1" thick to me?6 Miller Big Blue 600 Air Paks2 Miller 400D6 Lincoln LN-25's4 Miller Xtreme 12VS2 Miller Dimension 812 4 Climax BW-3000Z bore welders Hypertherm 65 and 85Bug-O Track BugPair of Welpers
Reply:Where is any substantial part of that smoker/cooker that is 1" thick?  From what I can see, at most, you might have 3/8" material."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.

Reply:Trust me the pic doesn't give it justice the metal around the lid is 3/8" it's over kill all over this pit

Reply:Yea tell me about it. I actually asked if he would sell it to some one with the right equipment and cash
Reply:Lets see some pictures of the rest of this "beast".  Three 4'x8' sheets of 1" steel would weigh about 3840lbs.  From what is shown in your picture there must be one he!!'va lot more that is not shown to total 3500lbs."The man of great wealth owes a peculiar obligation to the State, because he derives special advantages from the mere existence of government."  Teddy RooseveltAmerican by birth, Union by choice!  Boilermakers # 60America is a Union.
Reply:That's all he sent me I'll ask of he has more oh and it's 10ft long
Reply:3400# is what he told me it weighed
Reply:5-6 inch pipe that is 1/2 inch thick is strong enough to hold up your cooker.  You are right about it being over kill.  those doors are going to take a man to open.  I know on the 3/8 inch doors on my last cooker it was not small feet to lift them.I would love to see more pictures of your cooker.  I would use 6010/11.  if you want prettier finish welds then 6013/7014/7018.  If you can roll it up side down and weld the legs on that way 7024.  I would cope the legs to the pipe bevel the joint and fill to 1/2 fillet welds.
Reply:Perfect thanks that would be 1/8" rods
Reply:yep 1/8 is fine.  Let me clarify a little on my previous statement.  If I were doing it I would most likely use 7018 due to the fact I have alot of it and use it primarily.  My statement was intended for those not  accustom welding with 7018.  For me the simplest rod is either the 6013 or the 7014 and those are perfect for this application.  The reason I mentioned 6010/11 is because everyone has them and if that is all you have then that is fine.  In reality, any mild steel rod that you can weld effectively with is the rod I would recommend.  This application is perfect for all of them due to the fact that it isn't being welded to a rocket ship, a trailer, or a going to potentially kill anyone.
