ok i've decided on starting a cnc plasma build in the near future...for my controller i put together a 2ghz intel pocessor, with 1.5gig memory, 40gig hard drive dual booting ubuntu 10.4 with emc2 and also winxp and mach3.. both are working in simulation and the computer is stable, its been on for 3 days... I'm still contemplating designs but pretty much have the base design i want to go with... i'm going to make it 2ftx4ft or 3ftx4ft and i need to build the base/frame that the rails will bolt to... this has to be as square as i can get it..probably use 1x3x3/16 or 1 1/2x3x3/16 rectangle tubing for the base.. i have a lincoln 180c, thermal arc 185, small horizontal bandsaw, drillpress and bridgeport mill available at my small garage.. if i start putting the frame together it is the foundation of the machine and has to be square, pretty much dead square... as square as possible, also the sides have to be parallel down the sides, no slight bend in the center from bent material or such.. as parallel as possible.  i'm thinking about milling the rails to length, then drilling and reaming and doweling corner brackets.. then bolting the frame together which would be pretty time consuming but the table would be bolt together and pretty much have no choice but to be square and parallel.. i could also mill everything to length and tack it completely then weld it completely together..  i've also thought of making corner brackets and just bolting the frame completely together without dowels..basically milling the center and end pieces to length then drilling and tapping the side rails and center rails and drilling clearance holes the corner brackets and bolting completely together.  i'm thinking this would probably be the better of my options plus i could completely disassemble pretty easy if i needed to..  this way i could have some adjustment on the ends if i needed it...i think the doweling and bolting would be overkill and very time consuming..what you guys think?tackleexperts.comwww.necessityjigs.comhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/mach...dingequipment/
Reply:I think you are over thinking this. I built a frame about 8 years ago for a guy. It was big enough for a 4x8 sheet to lay on. It had 6 legs. Was made of 2"x4" x 1/8" tubing and 2"x2" tubing. I made it using chop saw, little lincoln mig in my sig, grinder. It was more then satisfactory and has been trouble free since. I also have a bridgeport and lathe and with doing machining it is easy to get carried away on many things wanting extreme accuracy. Clamp it all down solid, weld it up. Do make sure to cut pieces accurately since obviously that will help on squareness. Twist is bigger issue. Your bolt on rails can be set front to back and parralel so welding main part with some care will be fine.Millermatic 252Lincoln 175 plusTA 185tswTA 161stlhypertherm pmax 45Victor torchHenrob torchAn S10 for each day of the week

Reply:If you do have the time though then go nuts. It is fun going all out on things and when people see it they are blown away. Nothing wrong with showing off a little ha ha.Millermatic 252Lincoln 175 plusTA 185tswTA 161stlhypertherm pmax 45Victor torchHenrob torchAn S10 for each day of the week
