how to price pipe fence

Just looking for any suggestions on how to price pipe fence. Is it better by the foot ,by the hour or any opinions. Its gonna be only about 40' at 8' spacings on the post all out of 2 7/8 pipe
Reply:Since it's not a huge job and you already have the specs, do you have the experience to calculate how long the job will take you and how much it will cost you (materials, consumables, etc.) in your head?  In other words, if you have done enough of this work to know what you'll have into the job, then price it by the job itself. It's going to be some calculation of time/length/material/profit anyway... Reply:Compute how much you'll charge by the foot.  Then when someone off-hand asks "how much for pipe fence" you can tell them "$X per foot".  When you get down to someone serious about it, you're going to want to see the job and see any problems.  Elevation changes, ditches/creeks to cross, brush to clear, gates, corners, etc, etc.  Then you should bid the job accordingly.If I were buying pipe fence I wouldn't sign up for $X per hour open ended.  Who knows what quality of work the guy does or how much he's going to slack off.  Basically it's a blank check.I might sign up for $X per hour with a not-to-exceed number.  But do you think he's going to finish the job and then say "you only own me half of the not-to-exceed number".  No, he's going to run right up against it since he knows that's what you're willing to pay.  So he might as well give a fixed bid.Also the more detail you cover up front, the less hassles you'll have later.  Spec out the material, dimensions, etc, etc.  That way the customer can't complain "I expected new pipe instead of used" "I wanted four rungs here instead of three" "I can't fit my combine through the gate" and on and on.The customer should know exactly what he's getting and exactly what he's paying for it.Dynasty200DX w/coolmate1MM210MM VintageESAB miniarc161ltsLincoln AC225Victor O/A, Smith AW1ACutmaster 81IR 2475N7.5FPRage3Jancy USA1019" SBAEAD-200LE
