My 14 year old son recently completed his first paid welding job. We remodeled an old set of wooden cattle pens for some friends. He did all of the welding on this job. In this picture he building a gate for an alleyway. He has been welding for about 1 1/2 years. Attached ImagesLast edited by tscra22; 05-18-2009 at 07:47 PM.welder
Reply:That's awesome, I can't wait to get my son involved in my many metal/automotive oriented affairs. He's only four, though so we'll have to wait a while.
Reply:Looks professional from here  Do you have close up of the welds?David Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Pipe isn't an easy project for beginners either.  Having good fits is an art in itself.  Easy enough to get a good saddle on 1 end but getting the clock position the same on the other end is the challenge.Keep up the good work.IF IT WORKS, DON'T FIX IT2 Lincoln CV-300 / LN-7 GMALinde-VI 253,400 & 450 w/MIG35 feedersCNC Table with Oxweld O/A & Hypertherm 1250G3Lincoln Ranger GXT 250Hobart-MicroWire 300ESAB Heliarc 161ESAB-Mobilemaster 2 CC/CV Feeders& more

Reply:I think I tried that child labor law stuff on my dad when I was my sons age welding up a barn in July in north Texas while my dad sat in the shade, dont remember his reply, but I dont think it was very supportive.welder
Reply:I tried the child labor bit with my step-dad who was an Ironworker out of 387. His non-verbal response was also less than supportive and VERY memorable. We certainly need more Govt in our lives so these poor 14yr olds can escape the enslavement they're forced into  Seriously though, I'll show my kid the same thing if he wants. The more skillls you have, the better off you are.
Reply:Since I didnt have any pics of the welds on the pens he welded I snapped this one from our welding trailer we built. I failed to take any before I primed it. Attached Imageswelder
Reply:Very nice for a beginner.
Reply:He looks like a pretty big kid for only 14 years old. He looks like an adult with his mask on so he probably wouldn't even be noticed by the labor board during an inspection lol

Reply:Dude, I was just about to say that.  He is BIG for 14!
Reply:He's only 6'1" or so. So far he has done a great job on all of welding projects and is displaying the kinda of work ethics that I hope will make him a success in what ever field he chooses. He's already wanting to buy a 1 ton and mount his (quess I lost it already) 63 Sa200 on it.welder
Reply:Congratulations. It looks like you've given him a direction in life. Work hard, make money. Too many kids today don't have a clue. 9-11-2001......We Will Never ForgetRetired desk jockey. Hobby weldor with a little training. Craftsman O/A---Flat, Vert, Ovhd, Horz. Miller Syncrowave 250

Reply:...Well...I just finished some guard-rails at my job....going around several hydraulic 100 ton by 12 foot press-brakes...OSHA compliance stuff....  Used 1-1/4" pipe....coped the opposite ends with grinder....I use the inside weld seam for 'clocking' or lining up the opposite ends...works OK in a pinch....as tthe place just makes thin galvanized stuff for HVAC...no real welding stuff in the Maint. shop....just Miller-matic 35 and a chop saw.... Employer too cheap to buy any 90 degree elbows...so I made 22-1/2 degree cuts and a short 45 corner....not round, but not as 'sharp' as just 45-ing the corners. Attached ImagesDougspair
Reply:....OH Yeah.....thing is up-side down, as I was finishing the welds on the bottom, prior to welding on the 'feet'... Here's pic of unit in place....concrete anchors, and the side comes off for changing dies....slip fit with 2" x .120 wall round tubing.... Attached ImagesDougspair
