i want to weld a 3/8 round brass bar to a 1" brass slug about 3/4" long.i'm making a tank mount on a custom motorcycle. i've brazed sheetmetal and such but never brass to brass. is there something i should do or know about ahead of time ??? thanks in advance for help. Attached Images
Reply:Most brass to brass I have done I used silfloss. It's a silver solder, usually I try to get 15-25% silver. All you need to do is wire brush it all clean, and then braze it. We use it in heating& air conditioning. Also, it is used in plumbing on pipe over 1-1/4". And, all fire sprinkler lines that are copper are done with it instead of regular lead. Very strong stuff, good flow characteristics.
Reply:I would drill it so you can flow the metal into the joint getting a stronger join. I would tend to go for a higher solver content with a flux, brand name Easy-flo. I was taught that silfos is for copper and easy-flow for anything else, from tip tools onto a steel shank, brass, stainless. And generally the highest silver content is the best.
Reply:I concur with Clive, drill it, not only will it be stronger, it will be a prettier and easier to do joint.
