I am practicing on some stainless pipe.  It is ~0.13" thick.  ~1.90"OD  ~1.6"IDI have been using 100% argon, 2% Thoriated Tungsten 1/16", and a #7 cup.I was grinding a bevel and leaving about 0.05" left instead of leaving a feather bevel and then butted the pieces together so I had a closed root.  Fusing the root pass on some attempts and running a single pass (root/cap in one pass) on other attempts.I just got a few new cup sizes so now I have a #5, a #7, and a #8.I am using 1/16" stainless filler rod.I am running about 60-70amps and holding off on the pedal quite a bit once I get the heat into the material. What would you guys recommend I use for amperage, filler rod, bevel, root size, cup size, etc etc etc...?  I want to avoid struggling with getting setup so I have more actual learning time.
Reply:Personally, I don't know why you would need a bunch of different cup sizes.  The cup numbers are in 1/16ths of an inch, so you have 5/16", 7/16", and 1/2" cup sizes.  Does a change of 1/16" or 3/16" really make much difference?  I would go with the larger size cup and a gas lens shield the puddle and more of the completed weld, unless I had to get into a tight area to weld, or needed a smaller size to walk the cup on the joint, or was real cheap on gas and wanted to run really low flow rates with a small cup.
