I have heard guys claim that they can do all kinds of things. I have seen very few who actually can. I have heard magic stories about drinking milk for welding galvanized, I have heard of potato juice for flashburn.BUT Ladies and Gentleman, you will not believe this claim I make. I can prove it at your shop or mine any day, any time, any location. I can control the wind. Yes, it's true. I can take a perfectly calm 100degree day in the desert here in Yuma, AZ and turn it into a windstorm. HOW? You ask! Simple. All I have to do is decide to MIG weld outside because the weather is so nice. About 3 seconds into my first bead and up comes this eastern wind from nowhere! I thought it was a fluke, but no. I stopped welding and waited. I did it again and again. With repeated, predictable results! This is in fact in addition to my ability to control the rain. If you go to Weather.com and check my zip code 85364, you will see that we get little to no rain. Yet, when I wash my wifes car I can expect rain within 24hours with approximately 95% repeatability. So I am here to tell you guys that I may quit welding and go to work on the next X-Men Movie as a real live Mutant. Watch for it in a theater near you!Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain

Reply:I made a lot of trips to and spent a lot of time in the Yuma area back from about '87 to the early '90s. Like '94 maybe. Over on the Winterhaven side. Always stayed in Yuma. I remember hot and hot and then it could get hot. Would just beg for a breeze, then when you got one it was like a weed burner in the face.

Reply:You and I are somewhat kin. I moved here working for Qwest as a fiber optic technician. Then USwest bought us, well, they did, but we kept the name....It's a mess. And we both weld. funny. Reply:Sandy, are you inside or outside maintenance?
Reply:Slight correction : SBC bought AT&T( and started using the name  "AT&T " ) . Sbc is (was) a cheapskate operation . I think they have a "WAL-MART " mentality . you know - "ALL for ME, none for you ".

Reply:I don't know if my experiences might apply to any body else, but; when i was an apprentice at Mare Island ship yard, when it came to my 7018 test/with hts plates, i kept failing the vertical. it was my school (practice) test, before i went to the weld lab , for the "official test ". finally, the instructor said to me "Roy , I know you're better that that . " so he told me to get him some of the 8018 5/32 Low HY    i was using , and he took the same test and failed , when he scarfed it out ( he scarfed better than anybody i ever saw in my life) (it was as clear as watching a movie , or a flouroscope). then i went and opened a new can of the rod. it had a copy of the certification , it it said it qualified at 180 amps ! He stopped that test untill we ran out of that batch of rod . it was part of a navy purchase- 90,000 pounds of that size &type . - try welding 5/32 verticle at 180 amps. and pass an x-ray test . if you can , well... God Bless you .
Reply:Roy:180A w/7018 5/32"? Vertical? Wow! That's a lot of heat! It gives a whole new meaning to the term "grapes"! I usually would run that in at 130-150A, and use a 1/8" rod for the root(@110-120A). As much of what I weld is 30-40 years old, even these lower heats can get pretty hairy at times. Crazy, the things you see/learn in ship repair. Though the recommended CO2 flow for FCAW is 25-35CFH, we normally run at about 50-60CFH. Anything lower just blows away.
Reply:well, maybe i did not make it clear; the co. tested it at 180 , but  you can bet that was FLAT. I doubt the company bothered to try any other position . I forgot to say we were allowed to run one pass up the plate (1 bead) with 1/8th . then all the rest with 5/32 . but, when we ran the 5/32 vert. it was probably around 120-130 amps. hard to tell, we were using grids , with knife switches ,off a huge motor generator , about 1500 amps. real old fashioned stuff, that was early 1966 .Above I mentioned 8018, sorry, it was 7018 - it welds pretty close to 8018 , & is a lot cheaper (was) for practice. -   a side note , some years later , when working for Kaiser Steel , i went to the shop stores , where we were allowed to buy most anything Kaiser had , at Kaiser's cost . I said to the store room guy , I want 100 lbs. of 8018 -5/32 .  He said , no you don't , you want 7018  ! I asked why, he said i can sell you the7018 for 23.97 cents /lb. ( tax included )  - you have to pay 47 cents/lb for 8018 .  i took the 7018 , and welded on cleats to build up the tracks on my dad's  D 2  CAT . worked great, even though  cat dealer parts man recommended 8018 .    AH, the good ole days   !Last edited by Roy Hodges; 06-21-2006 at 06:56 PM.
Reply:maybe you guys get tired of my tales (all true) . Another funny story while i was beginning in welding school at the navy yard , on the grids , we would some times switch welding leads from one grid to another. one guy keep try to raise his amps , the other trying to lower his . It was funny , unless they were messing with YOUR grid .
Reply:Roy...I have no idea what a grid is? Can you elaborate? It sounds interesting.Lincoln Power Mig 210MP MIGLincoln Power Mig 350MP - MIG and Push-PullLincoln TIG 300-300Lincoln Hobby-Weld 110v  Thanks JLAMESCK TIG TORCH, gas diffuser, pyrex cupThermal Dynamics Cutmaster 101My brain

Reply:Originally Posted by welder4956This is totally amazing!  I tried this yesterday and it really works.  I got the lawnmower out to mow the front yard, and by the time I got from the shed to the front of the house there was a downpour!  I couldn't figure out how to make it stop though, so I covered the mower and went back in the house.  It seems that when you don't care if it rains, it will just stop on it's own!
Reply:So you've got some magical powers over the rains...Sounds like a plus...You setup a horse drawn wagon.. Paint "MIGWEL RAINMAKER" on the sides, and tour the nation with your mig...  Farmers who need rain for dry crops, or counties who need rain to quell forest fires, are your big dollar clients...  Drive up, park the horses in the field, and bring out your magic mig...  and down comes the rain...  It's a lot better than Indian rain dances which hardly ever work these days...
Reply:refence to #19 - joker ; a grid is a panel  of resistance units, each unit has several knife switches. you connect the switches ( example ; you want 110 amps- you connect a 40 amp sw. &a 20amp sw. & a 50 amp switch . add thetotals , you get 110 amps. they commonly come in "6 packs ") a multiple operator grid system hooked up to a big dc power source , usually a 1000 amps unit, or larger. that way ,you could have 6 weldors hooked up to a single power source. the grids have resistance coils in them , and they glow red at night , like a big toaster oven .
Reply:even a single grid is (or was ) available , to hook up to a big machine , i used grids that had a 5 amp tap , & some even have a 2 1/2 amps switch , for fine adjustment   we only used grids for stick welding , once in a while if  we had air arcing to do , we might parallel  several grids  to air arc off of, but that was usually frowned on . ( hard on the grids, but not on the power supply . )Crap, I forgot about this thread. I missed a bunch of replies. Reply:We got a little thing here in washington.  If you put your rain gear on, it won't rain.  The second everyone takes off their raingear, it downpours.  Happens every single god damn time!So someone is always elected to wear raingear on overcast days to protect us all.
Reply:I have found I can control the wind too, but here the technique is to start sheathing a roof.  Wind will kick up immediately.I can even control exact wind speed.  The thicker and heavier the plywood, and the higher and steeper the roof, the higher the wind speed.  Favorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.
