I figured that since the "Let's see your welding rigs" was so popular, I wanted to try this.  I am wanting to make some bumpers for my GMC and wanted some ideas.  So, if you have pics of custom bumpers (front or rear, but more interested in rear) I'd sure like to see them.  Come on, show us your stuff!
Reply:I know it's probably not what you are looking for but here is my story. My reverse light are terrible so I wanted a little more light in the back and I don't like the look of broken lights hanging off the bottom of the bumper so I modified the stock bumper by frenching in a couple of cups made from pipe with a piece of plate on the end to keep road grime out. “Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ... WOW! What a ride!”

Reply:Heres some of the bumper I made for my 95 chevy. 6" pipe with custom cut fittings for the angles on front and standard fittings on the rear. The rear bumper only weighed 100lbs over the stock bumper and hitch set up. Ok my front bumper pics are missing, I'll have my brother in law take a few and send themto me since he bought the bumper. Reply:Busyman and littlefuzz, both of you have done amazing work on those bumpers."I'd rather be careful a hundred times as killed once"

Reply:This is my first project with my welder.  I think I'm doing pretty good.  I just wish I had a brake so I didn't have to cut each little piece.  It's all 3/16" plate, welded with my HH140 with C25.  Finish grinds with my Craftsman Pro 4.5" angle grinder.  And that's all I have, LOL.Mock-up of the "wings" after main section was doneOne side getting thereStarting to come togetherBack sides are cappedLast weldThe finished product will have some tubing connecting the two "wings" as a winch guard (whenever I get one), that will also have the two 7" HID lights on it.  Just have to finish some grinding, get the tubing bent and weld it on, and get the shackle mounts and weld to the supports I have to add the in interior of the bumper.Last edited by JeepinJosh; 04-08-2009 at 10:12 PM.
Reply:I like it Jeep, simple and effective.  Busyman, you can always go back and add the lights.  There is a tread on here somewhere that I put up of the front bumper when I first built it and it didn't have the lights or brush guard.  I think it made a HUGE difference in the looks of the bumper.DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools
Reply:You guys made some sweet bumpers, I think I'll just go ahead and take my pictures off this thread now“Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out and loudly proclaiming ... Reply:BigWhiteBeast,You did an excellent job. It looks great. I have had that same thought many times. Now to be a bonehead....that's not "Frenched". To be frenched as in most hotrod items like an electric antenna or something....you would shave the exposed pipe and make it flush with the surface of the bumper.Sorry the picture is so small. Reply:That's about what mine and busyman's are.  On mine the base is a piece of C4x5.4 so it has something to attach a winch to if I ever wanted to modify it to do so.  I don't think I ever will put a winch on the truck because there just ain't no use for it for me.  It all depends on what you're wanting to do with it.    BTW, Wello, do all of you aussie's have a thing for mad max   Looks like you could play bumper cars with that thing, looks different and I like different DewayneDixieland WeldingMM350PLincoln 100Some torchesOther misc. tools

Reply:Brett, the bumper on the blue Chevy what did you coat it with ? Rhino Guard ?
Reply:It was a spray on bed liner the local body shop uses. Its softer than Rhino and real soft compared to line-x. It is still on the bumper in use. The spray on works great as the truck run gravel roads all the time and doesn't get all nicked up.Brett B & B Fabrication and Welding Inc.Spalding, MI.

Reply:I just finished some "zombie slayer" bumpers for my Chev Duramax. I mocked up all the pieces with cardboard and hacked them out of 3/16" plate with my Miller 3080 plasma axe:The main crash area in the front got a 8" piece of C-channel steel.  This was done to add some strength when blasting through the soft bodies of the living dead:I fab'd up the shoes that fit the bumper into the frame in the same spot where the tow hooks used to go...again out of 3/16" plate held in with grade-8 hardware:All tacked together:Finish welded and welds smoothed down a bit:Some clevis mounts were also welded in.  This will let me pull zombie safe houses down and create makeshift forts and shelters to hide in:I then spent some time on a back bumper as well...gotta be able to hit zombies in drive and reverse:I decided the front needed some fog lights installed too.  I rolled some custom 16 gauge shrouds and chopped the bumper holes with the plasma again:All done.  I had the bumpers and rockers Line-X coated.  Even though their flesh is soft, zombie bones are still pretty hard and can chip the paint as you're rolling over piles of them.  The back bumper got a reverse fog light too:www.lindgrensupercars.comMiller Dynasty 350Miller Dynasty 200DX - retiredMiller Millermatic 210Miller Spectrum 3080Miller "Power of Blue" stool  Miller Syncrowave 180SD - retired

Reply:Looks like I have to build some more bumpers, or at least add something to mine.
Reply:Thanks for the kind words.  They aren't perfect, but I think they turned out pretty good for not having anything done with a CNC laser or press brake.  I figure since I can't move either of them on or off the truck by myself, I should be relatively safe too.  www.lindgrensupercars.comMiller Dynasty 350Miller Dynasty 200DX - retiredMiller Millermatic 210Miller Spectrum 3080Miller "Power of Blue" stool  Miller Syncrowave 180SD - retired
