damn cast iron comeback!

Dude comes to shop asks to weld pot, gave him the "its cheaper to get new one" speech. He gave me the speech- "its my dead uncles pot he had for 30 years and it cracked the first time I used it". So I welded it, about 4 months later he comes back and told me that the pot leaks. It cracked along weld and into new area as you can see from gouge. I asked a few questions and if the answers were true it porbably would not have come back?Another day of having fun at the shop!Peter Attached Images
Reply:I forgot procedure! gouge, preheat 650, OA braze hot, post heat 650, turn off oven let cool.Peter

Reply:Originally Posted by hillcoDitto!  There are jobs you should turn away, or only do with the clear understanding that you are "sticking it back together", but it is no longer fit for service.  I run into a number of these with cast iron and old rusted out lawn furniture that the ladies want to use only for decor or to place potted plants on.  I say it before I take the job, and repeat it when its finished...doesn't mean it won't come back, but I won't feel bad charging them again, and giving them the talk all over again.  Too bad I can't tack a little microchip on the piece confirming the confirmation on a certain date.
