So i've used alot of 7018's before, (fleetwood, excaliber, hobarts, radnor) and the list goes on and on. I just like to try all the new brands and see how they stack up to the rest. Well anyways i came across some McKays at my local welding shop. They just happen to be on sale for .50$ a lb. Steel of deal even if they did turn out to be crap. But low and behold these have been the absolute best "out of the can" 7018 rods i have ever used. They hold a superb arc even up hill or overhead, very forgiving on the arc lenght, the slag sticks like glue and peels off like 6013. I have been super impressed with this rod and i'm making it my number 1 go to rod. Just wondering if anyone else has tried them and had a similar experience. I haven't baked them yet, but if they keep runnin this good i'm going to have to throw my rod oven away.
Reply:McKay has long been my prefered brand !! Wish I could get it for .50 a lb, I'd be stocking up.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:Thats a great deal .Im in so cal too, are they still running a special?
Reply:McKay is great wire, high end Hobart.Disclaimer; "I am just an a$$hole welder, don't take it personally ."
Reply:I loved their 7018. Can't buy it around here for any $. Beats Lincoln anytime.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I've been using McKay 7018XLM's for about 5 months now. They beat Lincolns by a mile, IMO. Hobart 418's are my favorite, though.
Reply:Vhram i just pm you
Reply:The ones i bought are also XLM's, and i agree cold-heartedly with you DDA52.
Reply:Reason why it was so cheap is it was discontinued. My LWS gave me an unopened 50# can and threw 4 more in the dumpster. Said he couldn't sell it...BobBob WrightSalem, Ohio Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun
Reply:Wow what a shame. I really love these rods.
Reply:I don't think they are discontinued by McKay...maybe by that particular LWS.... maybe. My LWS has a couple of pallets of them now and assures me I can get 10 more if I want anytime. They sell them just as well as Lincolns.
Reply:The rods i got were McKay Millennia 7018 so i may not be talking about the same rods as yours...BobBob WrightSalem, Ohio Birthplace of the Silver & Deming Drillhttp://groups.yahoo.com/group/southbend10k/http://groups.yahoo.com/group/sawking/1999 Miller MM185 w/ Miller 185 Spoolmate spoolgun
Reply:Nope, never heard of those. I use McKay 7018 XLM's. They have another 7018, but I don't remember what they call it.
Reply:The local welding supply was discontinuning the XLM's and now they stock the millennias. They sell them for $12 a 10# can so its a good price still. I tried a some the other day and they are VERY good also. |
