What does the letters RG stand for in RG 45 Rod

Can't seem to nail down the correct definition of the letters RG. Some have mentioned General Rod but was an assumption. This is pertaining to the filler rod RG 45, Any Help?
Reply:R stands for rod (although wire may carry this designation too, it is just a thinner form of rod).G stands for gas.  This means that it is designed to be used for oxy-acetylene welding.E stands for electrode.Does this help with your homework?
Reply:R=Rod G=Gas Note that the G is not always used in the classification but was added to differentiate the electric and gas fillers once the tig process adopted the fillers from the mig process. 36" Tig fillers are typically ER, which is funny since the E stands for Electrode. Go figure. Anyway The R series range from 45 to 100.
Reply:Thank You rlitman, this was a question from a student that I didn't have an answer. And thank you makoman1860 for the detailed clarification, I will pass this on to my student. I might add there was little information on the classification, only speculation. I searched the web, called the local AirGas rep and the student followed up with Lincoln and Miller, none of which could give the above answers.
