Reply:1/2" solid square bar stock for ballisters...No, you definitely can't buy that at Lowest or Home Despot.  Most railing I've seen recently is all hollow tubing, and falling apart. What's the price/labor multiplier for working with solid bar stock over tubing?  Besides being easier to weld on without burning through, are there any other advantages from a fabricator's perspective?Benson's Mobile Welding - Dayton, OH metro area - AWS Certified Welding Inspector

Reply:Nice rail.  Great quality. I like the look of solid bars.  I rarely build using solid.  Learned early-on save your back.  I Build with solid only when called for.  Burn-through is really a non-issue, If you do it enough. If a rail is just fallling apart, it isn't because it was made of tubing-- fault the builder.
Reply:Real Nice Job, Runs parralel to the nosings, degree is right on. I notice you flange the bottom of your legs. Is that standard down there? Up here we core and use pour rock or equivelant.  Most people up north use solid stock for everything due to freezing and people salting the steps and such. Down south you all can get away with tubing. Lucky you. Just doesn't last up here, I hate the cold!Lincoln Ranger 8                        Lincoln 175                          Drill pressLincoln 225 mig                            Plasma                              8 ft brake        52" jump shear
Reply:App-ironworksWhy don't you use your hossfeld for bending those lambs tongues?  As a Blacksmith I guess you couldn't let it leave the shop without putting some fire on the metal.   Thanks for the insight, gclamp.I see burst tubing around  here(builder's fault) and damage where the metal meets the ground.  I would think keeping posts above the ground would be an advantage.  I do plates most of the time--shoes sometimes.I think the worst thing about tubing is it is nasty, dirty and oily, inside and out.  I think overall slower to work with than solid.

Reply:App, I wasn't doggin your methodology,  I was just wondering about how it's done in different parts of the country? I still stand by what I said in the post though, sweet job.Lincoln Ranger 8                        Lincoln 175                          Drill pressLincoln 225 mig                            Plasma                              8 ft brake        52" jump shear
