Thought I'd better post some welding photos. Now guys, I'm just a weekend DIY stickwelder guy, so no close-ups of any welds from me.It's high, but I'll be storing a big canoe under it.The cross beam is 150UC with one end embedded in the wall of the house, and the other end sitting on a 100mm square hollow post. The perimeter is 125mm PFC sitting vertically. On top of it, on edge, is a 40mm flat that conceals the roofing. The whole thing is about 7 metres long. The guttering sits between the 125mm PFC and a 75mm square hollow. The roof sheeting is white corrugated iron laid face down.Did it all single handed, except the 150UC - had a mate help me lift it.The engineer originally specified 150mm PFC for the perimeter.I negotiated him down because I knew I would have trouble getting it up. The conversation went like this:Me: 'So Rex, do I really need 150mm? That thing will be strong enough to park a car on.'Rex: 'But you wouldn't?'Me: 'No. I'm not going to park on top. Can we go down to 125mm?Rex: 'You'll get some flex.'Me: 'How much?Rex: '5-10mm'Me: 'It's a carport, Rex. I'll live with it.'Rex: 'Okay. 125mm.'Me: 'I could still put a car on it.'Rex: 'You won't, will you?'Me: 'No. I promise.' Attached Images
Reply:Pretty elaborate design mixed in there for sure. Did you measure for this horrible deflection your pal was worried about? Looks like it's working fine. So surely this isn't the cover you were talking about building maybe umpteen years ago is it? Seems like you've had enough time to build two or three.
Reply:I don't think you need to worry about any flex in that!!!! Folks in deep snow country dream of something like that. Good job, Scott. Reply:No, I ignored the whole deflection thing. But I won't put a car up there.Yeah, I built the frame a couple of years ago and only last weekend put the battens and sheets on. I have alot of trouble finishing projects. I get to 90% and move onto other things. My next job is to finish sheeting the kitchen ceiling - it's been three years I reckon.Scott
Reply:Aw go ahead and go for it Scott. Build a couple ramps to drive the car up there and make a section of roof removable so you can use it to change the oil. Might need to build a ladder then though. Just don't let your mate in on it.Really nice job.MM200 w/Spoolmatic 1Syncrowave 180SDBobcat 225G Plus - LP/NGMUTT Suitcase WirefeederWC-1S/Spoolmatic 1HF-251D-1PakMaster 100XL '68 Red Face Code #6633 projectStar Jet 21-110Save Second Base!
Reply:I have to admit when I was up there putting the roof sheets on I was thinking it was such a waste to not put something up there. But perhaps not a car.I would still like to build some sort of reflector up there to bounce more of the winter sun into that cold, dark courtyard.
Reply:Geez.............. that's like............STRUCTURALAnd y'all get what.......maybe 1/4 inch of snow in maybe 2 decades?Guaranteed not to fall down in your lifetime, my lifetime, or anyone else on the planet's lifetime"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
