I see a Hobart tr 300hf tig welder for sale for 800.00 has foot pedal, all cables. My ? it looks like an older machine.are they good machines? should i save up for something more modern,I'm basically a hobby welder but i like quality stuff
Reply:Yes the older machines are heavy duty and reliable transformer based. On the other hand, if you do need a part for the main unit, Hobart doesn't have support for them any further. I think Buffalo welding is the supplier or purchased the rights to their heavy duty commercial based welders. I chased it around for a bit when almost buying a similar unit.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:If it's in good condition and you aren't using it 8 hours a day, it should be fine. I have a 1984 Lincoln 250/250 TIG/Stick transformer machine that does beautiful TIG and stick. It's got a 40 % duty cycle at most amperages and the one you are considering is probably the same. Although Lincoln doesn't support these much anymore, you can still get parts. I also have a great independent repair man in my area who does reasonable house calls if needed. Fortunately I haven't need much except small stuff so far. I'm also a hobby welder. I might get something more modern sometime but I'm keeping the Lincoln. I'd go for that machine if it's running well.Last edited by gnm109; 07-12-2007 at 11:27 PM.Miller Millermatic 252Miller Syncrowave 200Liincoln AC-DC 225Victor O-A Set
