hey everyone, new here  just purchased an inverter tig 145 amps capability (its a lincoln invertec) and love it. much better than the old gasless mig that is for sure! however now i can weld with tig okay the lift tig aspect of it is becoming a bit tiresome..is there some kind of high frequency add on box that i can buy to convert it to a high frequency start? thanks guys!
Reply:Yes.  The best one on the market is the Miller HF251-D(1/2) which is the one I own.  It's a very nice unit.  Only does High Frequency, no slope functions, squarewave or anything like that. Will cost you about $1100 new.  On ebay you can get it for as little as $500.  A hell of a deal in the long run.  The nice thing about the HF is that when that HF arc starts you can see your workpiece just enough to where you can move your torch around and see out of your hood then move to where you can to start the arc and progressively increase the amperage and start your weld. What kind of welder did you get?  Make/Model.
Reply:You just need to get the hang of the lift start.Push pedal down maybe 1/3 of the way, or so you think you have at least 30 amps.  Touch the tungston and edge of the cup to the plate, hold it there for a second or two to heat up the electrode. ROLL the tungston off the plate using the cup and away you go.I have a hi freq box I used to use on my gas lincoln with AC to do aluminum, but its continuous.  Cost me $200.  I guess its for sale for 1/2 what I paid.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Thanks for the info, ill keep my eye out for one!i have the Lincoln electric invertec 145. just an inverter lift tig with stick functions. im not sure if its for sale in the US however, looks like its an australasia only unit from the looks of their website. but its great i think. only problems ive had are eating through tungsten rods at an alarming rate and i shattered the cup once when i accidentally had the electrodes reversed and the tip melted back into the cup. argh!  still alot of learning to do anyway. thanks.
Reply:thanks for the advice on lift tig mate, i seem to have problems when i put the torch on the work it arcs just enough to stick to it and make lifting it off a problem. i guess rolling it off would help greatly.and my welder hasnt got any other current adjustment aside from the dial on the unit. however when i go high freq. i hope to get a better torch..thanks.
Reply:If you watch ebay, you'll come across several versions of HF arc starter, the nice $$$ new Millers and the old $ funky Century or Sears, but there a apparently a bunch of people in the world wanting to setup their own TIG cause they often get bid up beyond what I want to pay.  So I'm still using the old scratch start, but at least I've added a foot control.
