I am going to be moving to the Denver area in the spring and just wondering what kinds of jobs are there. Plentiful? Scarce? Portable? Job shops? I just want a job to keep me paying my bills and would eventually like to start my own portable business out there. I am looking at the Lakewood area. Seems there are plenty of quarries out there? Thanks. Dave
Reply:I'm sorry to hear that. I lived in Colorado for 7 months last year and early this year. Worst 7 months of my life.I'll clue you in on what it's like for work there. If you get into a union you will max out around $20/h. Non union you'll be lucky to make more than $15/h. There are so many welding businesses out there you will be lucky to get any clients. A co-worker of mine owned a big welding business that had contracts with companies like Intel and he just went under last year.If you go down south about 2 hours you can get hired instantly as a welder at the Commanche Power Plant expansion project. They need welders bad and there is stable work for about 3 more years. Contact the contractor "Shaw Stone & Webster" or "ICI" for that job. For jobs in the Colorado Springs and Denver area contact "GE Johnson" or "ICI". For GE Johnson talk to Phil Hernandez. If you can weld, you can probably be working in a couple weeks max with that company but you may need to commute an hour south to Colorado Springs.Good luck, hope it works out better for you than it did for me!Oh, and 105 degrees in the summer, -20 in the winter. Enjoy
Reply:Appreciate it. I'm lookin on Craigslist and there are tons of jobs but I am hoping to apply in person this winter. I know I can weld great, and confident in my fabrication/welding skills. I would take a job just to get by but would look for a union in the future. Could you email me that info you just posted at [email protected] ? I also have a CDL but that is just a backup plan. Anyways, I'd love to get in with a good construction company. Dave |
