After reading this thread http://www.weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=13492  It was pointed out that argon and mixes are ok to use and or transport in any position you want laying down upside down whatever as there is not liquid inside it is all in gas form.  With this being said I am planning on making a cart for my welder in the next day or two and I just thought instead of having the bottle standing upright could I utilize the space under my welder and slide my bottle in below it as I don't own a large bottle.  I was thinking just make something around the neck so it can't possibly get hit and broke off and maybe relocate the gauges so they are insight and around location of my controls for my mig.  I'm prob just trying to reinvent the wheel I hate doing the same thing everyone else does and sometimes I end up with a lesser product and sometimes it's better but this is just an idea tell me what you think?
Reply:That "relocate the gauges" part sounds messy. Three hoses coming off the regulator.
Reply:Little confused about the 3 hoses?  wouldn't it be one in and one out to the welder?and I was thinking the inlet hose would run through a hole strait from bottle up through hole to next shelf level where regulart screws in. (hard line)
Reply:Its gonna be hard to get a hose that will be capable of a gas at 2500 psi.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:If the bottle were laying under the machine with the guage just under the front, wouldn't that meet the "close to the controls" requirement and allow the guage to remain on the bottle? To me this sounds like a plausible concept. Our shop mig has a larger tank, and I'm always worried about it tipping when I have to move it around the shop.Actually I'm much more worried when another tech moves it because I don't feel they are as cautious as I am.Don't talk about it, Just do it!

Reply:Laying a large tank on its side is going to take up more floor space than being upright. With small tank, I would just leave it upright so the regulators are within easy reach and use the space under the welder for all the other welding related tools - wire brushes, hammer, magnets, clamps etc....I also like the regulators up out of the way on top of the tanks,  less chance of them getting bumped out of adjustment.

Reply:Just make sure that you don't use straight CO2, either.  I imagine that the denser "liquidous" CO2 could wreak havoc on your regulator if you siphon from a full bottle on it's side (especially if you are a cheap SOB like me, and are using a regulator not designed for use with pure CO2.)cricman

Reply:I wasn't planning on using "Hose" after drawing up my layout I'm looking at a piece of pipe about 5" long and also after looking at it I might not even do that I do agree there can be safety issues if not done properly.  I wil most likely just mount direct to bottle.  I just figure with a smaler 60cfm bottle like I'm looking at I can put it under the cart and make cart a little smaller and with my design it allows for my weld shelf to be adjustable like I'm wanting... After looking at cost of materials to make cart though I might just opt to get a HF cart for now... haven't really decided yet looking at the option of just using bed rails as I can typicaly come up with them for free... Just be a little heavier then I would like for some parts...

Reply:Why not just slide the tank in from the front and attach the regulator to it?  This would have everything the the front.  The biggest inconvenience is going to be turning the tank on and off, not adjusting the regulator, more or less  you just set it once in a while.
