Well i got my 30 second tig lesson, basically heres how you turn it on,good luck. I'm practicing with 3/16 mild steel are these settings correct? Reply:For 3/16" steel you need to start about 150 amps, with up to 200 recommended. Sharpen your tungsten as well, then give it a shot. What is your gas set at? Filler wire?John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:The only thing I notice is the Hi freq switch...Micro addressed the gas/tungestion issue..I leave mine on continous all the time..Yours is on startChange that and post your results!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:150 amps might be fine for a single pass full penetration weld, but I can see you using roughly half that on a small piece of material for something like a basic butt or tee joint.
Reply:Couple observations -- one, turn the arc control down as low as it goes.  If you dip the tungsten you don't want the power source ramping up the way it would for stick welding. Two, your tungsten looks like it got dipped or it melted.  If it melted, are you sure the machine is set up for electrode negative?  If it got dipped, no biggie, just resharpen and back to welding.30 second TIG lesson is more than I've had so far, so have at it and let us know how it goes.Oh and PS, that looks like a nice machine you got there.Last edited by phila.renewal; 08-03-2007 at 06:51 PM.Favorite right now is a Miller Syncro 200.Tons of tools and I blame at least one of them when things don't go right.
Reply:I think i read here somewhere that the arc control switch only has to do in stick welding modeVictor SuperRanger O/A                                         Solar migLincoln Powermig 140Southbend 9in lathe350# kohlswa anvilMiller Maxstar 150 stl etc....

Reply:Gas is @30?? You may be "blowing it past" what your doing up so high..I keep mine between 10 and 15max!Gas costs $$$$ you know.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Thanks Phila, that makes sense, and Zap the gas was set at 30 is there any metal or technique why it would be so high? Victor SuperRanger O/A                                         Solar migLincoln Powermig 140Southbend 9in lathe350# kohlswa anvilMiller Maxstar 150 stl etc....

Reply:Originally Posted by pulserZap,as hotrodder asked, why in the world would you do that?  I don't know of any reason why it would be bad to run continuous HF on DC, except for radio interference through the entire weld, but I also don't know of any reason it would be good. Why do you do this, inquiring minds want to know?
Reply:Just an observation.  The gas  cup had what looks like slag on it.  To me this means the plate isn't clean.  If I leave the mill scale on, it does that to my ceramic gas cup.  If you do touch the tungston, stop and grind it again.  It should be a point.  You will know if its contaminated if the arc changes colors or it sounds like you are stick welding. You have nice equipment to work with.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Zap why do you leave it on cotinous all the time ? I see your welds are outstanding but I have been told for 40 years to use start only on DC so help me
