What the...  The wife and I went to our favorite Mexican restaurant this afternoon for dinner.  We go here at least 3 times a week, they all know us by name, and they all know I am a welder.  Well, check this out.  A customer fell down the 2 steps in the picture, so they immediately had a hand rail built.  They said they couldn't find my card (even though I live across the street) and had a plumber build this hand rail.  It's made from COPPER PIPE.  Brazed joints, and ugly as all get out.  Gee, wonder how long this will last.Sorry for the poor quality photo, it was with my phone, shot from under the table. Reply:I give it a week maybe 2! The first huge guy or gal that leans on it & it will go down. Doesn't look to mount to the floor very well!3 times a week & they don't know you are just across the street? GeezFlashhttp://flashracecarbodies.com

Reply:Well maybe in a week or two, they will be walking across to get you! Still, copper? I can see some kid swinging on it now! El Bendo!Flashhttp://flashracecarbodies.com
Reply:I'm a union plumber by trade. That's pathetic. Call the city before someone gets hurt... I would never use copper for other than it's intended purpose.
Reply:At least it wasn't ABS.
Reply:Think he might have hidden some uglier Rebar inside of it?

Reply:If you go their that much.  Why not built them a new one.  Then bring it over and tell them it's a gift for them.  Tell them you are looking out for them, make them think and feel good about themselves and their customers.  Make sure it is the best one they have ever seen.  That way when and if someone ask's about it.  They will say it was a gift from the welder across the street, here is his number.Just my 2cents

Reply:I don’t remember the chapter and verse in the Uniform Building Code. There is a requirement for hand rails if the steps are wider than such and such, and another set of hand rails are required at the end on each side if the steps are wider. They may need three handrails altogether.   Grippable handrail required with 4 or more risers [1006.9ex3]Rail height shall be 34 to 38 inches [1006.9]Grips shall be 1-1/4 to 2 inches; max projection 3-1/2 inches [1006.9]Ends shall “return” to wall or newel posts [1006.9]
Reply:You are right Transit, it's not even up to code.  I'll have to look it up again, but I believe that with just 2 risers that it's not even required.  But you know, a "slip-and-fall" law suit can get costly.

Reply:Originally Posted by transitHot Dam!! I've been right twice to dayThe 4 step rule doesn't apply because there are two steps. However, being that there is a handrail in place the UBC kicks in again, and for wide steps, left to right you'll need handrails at the end of the steps too.At our Light Rail Stations the railing is also grounded.
Reply:now that you made sure they have your card, guess what happens when the toilet plugs up?  they'll call you, the welder.  then maybe you can custom fab a toilet and weld it to the wall (somehow).  Then the plumber will come and take a picture from "under the stall" and post it on plumbingweb.com LOLsorry, i can't help it.  I just find it funny how some people are just so desperate to get the job done, they hire the "next best thing".
Reply:Another point, do they have handy cap access, ADA, American Disabilities Act?  They may need ramps and a lavatory to accommodate wheel chairs. We had to change the bus driver’s lockers, now they have brail coding for the “blind” drivers. And at the Hoboken Station the lavatory on the second and third floors, not open to the public are ADA. No elevator to get up to the floors, and so, how do you get a wheel chair up the 6 flights?

Reply:its funny you mention the handicap bathrooms on the 6th floor, when i was redoing my shop, the city came in and complained about the position of my counter infront of the entrance to MY Office and said, it had to be handicap accesible, i said, its my office with my desk my paperwork and my safe in it, its NOT open to the public, they said it still needs to be wide enough to accomidate a wheel chair,... i said how the hell is that right? i dont have to grant anyone access to my private office, and if i end up in a wheel chair its my problem, i took it to council and eventually won and had the ruling overturned.New here and already loving this place.

Be careful where you step, their brains fell out of their heads.
