In the place where i work we have a MMA welding plant that is 80 years oldand still working it's real big about 3ftX4ft and youd need a crane to lift it!Dont no the name as its long since faded.
Reply:What is a welding plant?
Reply:He probably means the power unit itself - the welder.  John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:My Shieldarc SAE300 has a tag on it; as I recall, tag says: "WAR PRODUCTION BOARD 1943". It could have been already in service when tagged. I'm sure there are much older welders out there.Last edited by denrep; 08-10-2007 at 03:38 PM.
Reply:Have no idea how old the oldest was. It was an old Lincoln that had everything on the face plate worn off. It would burn a rod smooth though. My Lincoln now isn't old but it's a great machine. An Idealarc 300 Tig, manufactured in 1984, a good smooth machine.Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:1954 Airco..Big orange thing with a black curved top that looks like a Miller now..Intake was done on that machine.....zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:One of the first Lincoln Tombstones for me.  Dial didn't read how many amps you were at so you had to just crank it up or down and adjust by how it welded.  Great way to learn how to weld if you ask me.
Reply:Airco wasp in orange and Marshall ?dynabolt i belive both was made by Miller ,i stand to be corrected on this.
Reply:Well, my 300 amp hobart portable is 57 years old .mfg. May 26 1950. This machine will put out 385 amps hooked to a load bank. There is all the aux ac power in it I have ever needed 6- 110 plugs, 240 single phase, 240 3 phase.
Reply:My dad had a lincoln gas welder powered by a wisconson V4 air cooled.  Crank start only.  I don't know how old it was, but I used it.DavidReal world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:welder boy i think your statement is spot on, someone should run with that one this machine was old 20 years ago ,but still runs sweet, the threaded bar stops vibration turning the amps down. pipefitter. Attached Images
Reply:Not sure. Regularly use a 50's (or late 40's) vintage Lincoln SAE (purchased surplus in the early 70's) and a late 60's vintage Hobart.
Reply:After using a Hobart Stickmate for a couple of years, I recently acquired a Lincoln Idealarc TIG 300/300.  Made sometime in the 60's, it's fire engine red and weighs about 800lb.  I paid about $1/lb  delivered to my garage.  Since I got it I have been practicing my stick welding as often as I can.   Compared to the Stickmate the Idealarc seems to deliver a much smoother arc.  I guess that huge transformer will just crank out its current regardless.  It came with a tig gun and a watercooling unit but the coils in the radiator were burst from freezing.  I picked up a heater core for a Chevy truck on ebay for $25. It's a bit smaller than the original but I am sure it will do fine and if not I will add a big muffin fan to boost the cooling.  It's  a real pain searching for auto parts by size.  I was looking for heater core about 10"x10" and all the suppliers wanted to know  mfr, model and year.  I did a little bit of TIG in the welding class that I took at the local community college some years ago but other than that I have no experience.  Hanging around this forum and looking at the stuff that  Zap and other first class welders can do has inspired me to give it a serious try - after I get my stick technique to the point where I feel I am competent.P.S I am looking to sell my Stickmate and also my Handler 135Last edited by maddog; 08-14-2007 at 10:12 AM.355# Hay Budden3# Hofi HammerPropane ForgeIdealarc TIG 300/300AllStates Oxy Propane torchSmith Little Torch
Reply:Mine was a 1938 or 1939 Hobart unit with a flat head jeep motor in it. Nice welding machine if you could start it. Always took a can and a half of ether to start...even on hot days. Once it was started the first time, it was smooth sailing all day.
