I've been stick and MIG welding for a big company for a few years now.  We show up at power plants and an electrician either hard wires our 4 packs, or we tie into 480.  Some jobs we use gas and diesel machines.  Thus, I don't know much about the setup of everything.  Here's my problem:I'm trying to buy an inexpensive and simple TIG setup for my house off craigslist and eBay and I'm lost.  The ads keep saying "single phase/3 phase etc".  I also don't know anything about gas gauges, bottles, foot pedals etc since we don't TIG at work.  I would like to be able to run it off a 220 stove outlet. Can someone help me put together a list of items I need to go from having nothing but a hood, gloves, and wire to running a bead with TIG.Thanks a lot guys.
Reply:The cheapest way to go is a buzz box and a Tig rig.Here read this kid's thread. http://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=58090Don’t pay any attention to meI’m just a hobbyist!CarlDynasty 300V350-Pro w/pulseSG Spool gun1937 IdealArc-300PowerArc 200ST3 SA-200sVantage 400
Reply:Thanks for the response.  Can I TIG with a Lincoln AC only buzz box?  I thought it needs a high frequency part to accommodate the alternations in current.  Can I later concert this to a foot-pedal system if I wanted to?  If I wanted to go the foot-pedal lift arc route, what would you recommend? Lastly, seems like a stupid question, but on an air-cooled TIG torch, where does it get the cooling air?  Does it need a compressor? Thanks.

Reply:NO!!! not on AC..... you will need an ac/dc arc welder, using DC for Tigging steel and single phase for using at your house most homes are 230volt single phaseLast edited by prop-doctor; 10-12-2011 at 05:37 PM.idealarc 250/250 ac-dc tigidealarc 250/250 ac-dc tig #2 used for sticklincoln sp100hh125dual arbor grinder polisher30 yrs of hand tools52 pitch blocks 6p-26prake gauge -pitch gaugeG&D prop repair 918-207-6938Hulbert,okla 74441

Reply:It might be overkill for what you need, but a Dynasty 200DX would run nicely from a 220vac single phase dryer outlet and be capable of hooking up to 3 phase at a job site if needed.
Reply:Originally Posted by DSWI'm not that familiar with the Lincoln tig's, but from what he has posted that should work for you. Chances are you probably will be some what limited on output with a 50 amp stove outlet. I'd have to go to Lincolns site and pull up the manual to see jsut how many amps it needs at rated power, but for light weght steel say up to 1/8'-3/16" you should be able to run it and not trip the breaker. As far as a air cooled torch, it gets it's cooling from the argon flowing thru the torch.  "air cooled" is some what a misnomer. It doesn't need a compressor for you to use it.
