Hey guys!! So at school lately, we've been learning to walk the cup on scrap plate, flat position. I really like it, and even tho Ive only been working on it for a little while, I like to think Im getting better at it. Ive tried it without filler and Ive just recently started adding filler to the puddle, which is going great except that I usually slide the cup off the bead and that messes everything up. Without filler its not an issue because the bead isnt any higher than the base metal, but with filler its a problem. lol. I know its a nooby question, but do you guys have any tips that might help me? Its a WP-20 style torch, with a #7 cup. Reply:Hello Lanse, part of what you are experiencing has to do with having the correct amount of pressure against the bead with the cup. This is somewhat of a practiced and learned thing that is unique for each individual welder. You will likely practice many hours to get the "feel for it", beyond that, there are cups that are made from different materials and they have the ability to "grip" the bead surface more positively. I have a compadre of mine who is a ways north from me, I'll try to hit him up for his specific cup type/brand suggestion. It is something that he pointed out once when a similar question was asked by someone else on another forum. Besides just practicing in class with "live" welds, get a hold of a torch assembly without the lead attached and practice the walking technique whenever you have some spare time at home or anywhere else, it'll help you immensely in the long run with the technique. Good luck and best regards, Allanaevald
Reply:Relax, use a light touch, and a big cup usually does better for walking. If the metal gets too hot, it's also easier to lose traction.
Reply:Hello again Lanse, I found the post that my buddy had made where he discussed a particular type of cup. I'm going to try to copy/paste it into this response.      "As far as walking the cup, the best cup every invented IMO is the Lava cup from Weld Craft.  They are dirty white in appearance.  Their big advantage is their edge doesn't readily glass up like pink cups typically do.  The material is slightly crumbly so any glassing can be removed and/or wears off during cup walking.  A contaminated or glassed area can be reconditioned on a belt sander to some extend if need be... whereas a pink cup just pretty much wears a hole in the belt."      The italicized section above were his comments on cup walking. Best regards, Allanaevald
