It's a sad day for my little riveter's forge. It had an air leak by the tuere valve and got a little hot. I had already converted it to an electric blower. Well it was a sucker converted to a blower. I still have the original blower from the forge. One day I'll patch up the crack and put the whole thing back together in original configuration. I can't bear to scrap it since it was my Dad's and he gave it to me. I'll use the electric setup in the new forge. Here's the new forge, still in kit form. 1/4" plate.Trimmed the plate to square and cut out the hole for the firebox. The firebox parts cut out. The flange will make the connection from the blower to the fire box. Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Firebox and flange all welded up Close up of welds.Added 3/8"x1-1/2" h.r. flat to stiffen up table.Flipped it right side up to weld inside firebox.Added more 3/8"x1-1/2" flat to raise sides of table to keep coal from spilling out. I'll probably make a couple of sliding fences that clamp to the flat bar to use for keeping coal contained during smaller heats.OK. Back to work gotta flip it back over to add legs, brackets to hold the blower, a panel to mount the switch, and figure out the tuere grate.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Cool. It's been years since I did any forge work myself. I keep telling myself I'm going to treat myself to a class in the area and get back into it again, but their schedule never seems to work with mine.I've looked at several designs and will keep at eye on this. I curious to see it as it goes together and would love to see picts as you go to use it and how it works compared to others I have seen.
Reply:Nice BrianI have had thoughts of building a forge using plate, never found the time yet. Is this the first one you build from plate? I have not seen anything but cast iron forges. Please keep us posted when you put this to use.ThanksPeter
Reply:Thanks. Yup this is the first one I've built at all, much less out of plate. I've used a couple of cast ones and a few tin pans Buffalo forges. Just the blower and tuere housing were cast on those. I'm a little curious myself. I think it'll work pretty good. Most of what I'd be doing is 6 to 12 inch scrolls for gates and such. So the large table and flush firebox should make positioning the work piece pretty easy. My biggest question about design is the size of the fire box. Gotta hold a fire big enough to knock out several pieces at a time without eating too much coal. I'm going to put 4 legs, 2 wheels and a handle so I can roll it around easy. I'll add some sort of tool holder racks to it as well.Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]

Reply:Peters Valley is a bit of a drive for me and their classes run several days and into the work week. All in all I think the prices are down right cheap, not including room and board. Oh well maybe next year. Here's the link to thier work shops.http://guest.cvent.com/EVENTS/Info/A...3-2f3e55f9cb67I've thought about a small truck rim forge. I've got several blowers stashed against that day. If I could ever get the garage cleaned out, I could do a gas forge no problem. My main runs on the other side of the garage wall so tie in would be easy.
Reply:I finally got a chance today to finish up the new forge. I'll fire it up Monday, to test it out. I hope it will work well, I need it for a job next week. Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
Reply:Well I got to fire it up today. So far it's run for 4 hours without a problem. Brian LeonardAppalachian Ironworks L.L.C.434 Long Branch Rd, Marshall, NC 28753828 649 9966828 702 [email protected]
