Hello,By accident we welded a 316L flange to a 316L pipe using SS 308 filler material. Does anybody have any concerns doing that? Is the strength of the weld significantly reduced?Any feed back is appreciated.Thank you
Reply:The stength differences between the two filler materials is not huge the 308 yields at 58 ksi and UTS of 85 ksi. 316L filler will yield at 57 ksi and UTS at 86 ksi. Probably the bigger difference is in corrosion resistance of the two materials. 316L has a max carbon content of .03% while the 308 has .08%. the 316 also has significantly higher molybdenum to help with preventing pitting.Arguing with a Welding Engineer is like wrestling with a pig... after a while you realize the pig likes it
