do i need to remove the copper coating on the mild steel filler rods?
Reply:No, if you're speaking of the GTAW process or TIG, then NO. If the filler wire has been sitting around for a while, it's advisable to just wipe them off with some acetone, brake clean or other solvent.John - fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!- bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com

Reply:I used to think they put the copper coat on as a rust preventative but then I read they use the copper to help them draw the wire through the die.....Thermal Arc 185 TigHTP 200 MigCraftsman O/A1942 Bridgeport Mill12 Ton Hyd PressConsew Walking Foot

Reply:Thoose rods are for O/A welding, i got a few. The copper helps prevent contamination of the filler rod. As for helping to draw the rod? No idea.
Reply:Steel TIG wire is copper coated too.Miller EconotigCutmaster 38Yes ma'am, that IS a screwdriver in my pocket! |
