Hi, I've become interested in taking a welding course here in San Antonio.  I've never welded before and would like to try it out before I sign up for a class.  I was wondering if anyone in the area has the ability to get me welding.  Thank you.
Reply:I live 50 miles west of San Antonio, I was a welding instructor for 25 years but retired now. Which process do you want to learn? Have a small shop set up and do small jobs for public. I have arc, oxy acet, Mig , Tig.Last edited by TEDTWOFEATHERS; 10-16-2011 at 07:13 AM.
Reply:Apparently the school teaches all the different kinds of welding.  I've never welded before so I'm not sure which I'd want to specialize in.  At this point I'm just trying to get started doing it so I can get a better idea if it's something I want to pursue long term.  I'd love to get the chance to try it.Last edited by Texas7; 10-16-2011 at 07:35 PM.
Reply:Texas, if I was you I'd Pm Ted and think about seeing what he wants to let you come over for a few hours and try a few things. Mig is usually the easiest to learn for most. You can do a lot of different work with a mig from thick to thin sheet metal. Stick machines are usually cheaper to buy if you are looking for a machine of your own. They are good for heavier materials, say 1/8" and up, but not as easy to use as mig on thiner sheetmetal like body work. Tig is a bit more specialized. Usually it's used for thin metals and detailed work. It's also usually the best choice for stainless and alum. Of the tree arc proceses it usually takes the longest to learn to do well. OA is a good all around process thats not that expensive to get into that will let you do a lot of stuff from thin to medium ( say 1/4") The hard part is finding an instructor who's good at teaching OA since it's not used that much industrially today. An idea just where you want to go with your welding will help point you in the right direction. Are you looking to do vehicle repairs and off road stuff? want to do just general hobby projects? Have a farm and need to do heavier equipment repairs? Want to learn this to get a job and if so what kind of job and so on..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear.
