Have few projects that I would hope a 90 to 125 amp flux core wire feed 115v arc welder will handle;A.  Outdoor square tube (1.25) inch 3/32 tube  hand rail and balcony type railings. B.  Aquarium stand just like this thread and user postedhttp://weldingweb.com/vbb/showthread.php?t=52210Putting 2500-3000 lbs on this stand, need to feel confident the welds are secure.Assumptions;Project A. will be my learning experience after playing with scrape pieces.Key Questions; What is a good test to ensure the welds are effective? Will the 100amp 115v do the job on 3/32 1.5 square steel tubing?thx!Last edited by TacinLA; 11-05-2011 at 12:53 AM.
Reply:I wouldn't trust it. Most manufacturers way over rate small migs. 110 v mig/FC machines are notorious for making pretty looking beads with very poor penetration. Under real world conditions a good 140 amp class mig tops out at 1/8" steel. Even then your duty cycle is pretty low. For 3/16" I'd want at least a 180 amp class 230v mig. A decent stick machine would be another option, again probably a 230v unit unless you want to spend some decent money on a top end inverter unit to run on 110v power. As far as knowing how good your welds are, a real bend test will quickly show you if they are up to standard or not. Beating on a weld with a hammer shows you almost nothing. If you do a search on bend tests here you'll see a bunch of info on the subject. The two biggest issues you will have with a small FC machine will be slag inclusions, where you bury slag in the bead due to poor weld technique, and poor penetration into the base material due to the lack of power with 110v machines..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Reply:Thanks for the input.     The stand will be 3/32 not 3/16.   I know a few tank owners that built their own and hope you're wrong. Thanks again.
Reply:Would your view change if you thought of it in this way, the stand your looking to build is going to hold up a car?
Reply:I could have sworn you said 3/16" ... It was late, maybe I was thinking of another thread, no matter.A 125 amp mig would be up to 3/32". You'd be close to max, but it's doable. At that point I'd be more concerned about the design being capable of taking the load..No government ever voluntarily reduces itself in size. Government programs, once launched, never disappear. Reply:Hmmm.. Are you actually in Los Angeles?  I'd be just a wee bit nervous that your design totally handles earthquake loads.  Normally fish tank loads are straight down, pretty easy to deal with.  Earthquake loads are a little bit different matter.   If you had a large tank (3000# is a pretty big load), and it was high off the ground, I'd be concerned.  --zip
Reply:Thanks all, you have successfully talked me out of steel stand.  I have a 150 gallon reef tank on a wood stand I built in 2006. My next tank is 60 x 30 x 22 high glass.  Stand will be 32 inches off the ground. I will stick with wood.  Steel looks sexy but would be completely covered up by my cherry facing anyway.  Can do it myself in wood for substantially cheaper than having a welding shop do it and then have powder coated.   If I  buy a cheap welder, I'll stick to outdoor hand rails and such.Goodluck and watch out for those flying sparks!

Reply:I'd would also suggest at least a 140 amp machine. There a big difference in that step. Don't give up on a steel stand yet, just get yourself plenty of practice a a few smaller projects under your belt first.Tough as nails and damn near as smart
