My shop looks like a tool truck and a scrap truck collided. As much as I hate to I have to start cleaning it up today. Anyone have good ideas for organizing and storage in a smaller shop. Only 20x30 and full.
Reply:That's easy, as you're going through stuff, throw away everything that causes you to say "I forgot I had that"

Reply:I hear ya guys, I find a lot of that "I forgot I had that" stuff. Some of it is going out the door into the trash pile or the scrap iron pile.

Reply:When we made the 1600 mile move back in '99, I filled a 40 yard dumpster with all the stuff I "couldn't do without" from the shop. That doesn't include all the stuff I gave away or had the scrap man haul off. Trouble is, I could probably do it again.Shelves. Reply:After spending a good part of the day cleaning I have made some headway. I really hate cleaning.
Reply:Shelves and drawers are the way to go. If it does not fit on the shelves and drawers, and is sitting on the floor, it needs to go. Consider going up, high shelving, using every cubic inch. Just don't put heavy objects over your head.If you have not used it in a year (or two years, or whatever number you like), it needs to go.Yes, I will admit I do not always follow my own advice.RichardSculptures in copper and other metalshttp://www.fergusonsculpture.comSyncrowave 200 Millermatic 211Readywelder spoolgunHypertherm 600 plasma cutterThermal Arc GMS300 Victor OA torchHomemade Blacksmith propane forge
Reply:Not sure what you have for stock but for myself I did this for some of the stuff.
Reply:I do have some square tubing peices and a few other odds and ends. I am goint ot build a small rack for that and I am also going to build me a clamp tree for my different clamps.

Reply:going vertical is always a good way to maximize floor space. I turned my kids old loft bed into over head storage for the garage. the bikes are on pulleys from the ceiling as well. shelves are nice, but cabinets are better. They'll help keep the dust and dirt and crap off the stuff you're not using at the moment.Just remember. The higher it is, the lighter it needs to be.There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:If a guy could see into the future and it would save a lot of truble, You find somthing drag it home store it worry about it move it out of the way and then scrap it years later and say your not going to do that any more then fined somthing to start the prosses over with the next day. I almost admier people that dont collet stuff.
Reply:I come form a long line of pack rats. People who never throw anything away. Its a hard habit to break.
Reply:My wife and I are on the opposite end. We aren't pack rats, but sometimes we get rid of stuff too fast. Usually a week or two later I am asking her about something and we realized we gave it away or threw it away.DOH!Glad it doesn't happen that often though. Reply:wb4rt, I appreciate the offer but none of my stuff is worth storing. Lots of junk.
Reply:Did you decide to build a rack of some sort? I just acquired a lot of odd metal pieces from a store closing in my area, and I now realized my Rubbermaid bin is... lacking in it's storage capacity.JoeMiller 140 Autoset (2010)Miller Syncrowave 250 (1996)
Reply:i am planning on building a couple of different racks and such for different things.
Reply:Yeah I'm going to have to do something soon. I was also checking Craigslist for cheap metal shelving. That way you can cut it up and do whatever you want to it if you so choose.JoeMiller 140 Autoset (2010)Miller Syncrowave 250 (1996)
Reply:Another good source I found, if you can find them, is old ladder racks for pick ups. Lots of good tubing in them if you can pick them up for the right price. |
