What processes can be used to weld steel to cast iron? Specifically, I have a cast iron ornament that I want to weld a 5/8" steel rod to. In turn I will weld the steel rod to the side of a steel barbeque smoker.
Reply:You might try brazing it and welding the piece steel to steel on the barbecue itself.
Reply:Plenty you can use. TIG, stick, OFW for just a few. If its just ornamental, brazing could work, I prefer to use everdur with TIG personally.
Reply:What kind of rod would you use for stick and what filler for OFW? I cannot use my larger TIG welders now and the only one that I can get to is a Dynasty 200DX and it is not large enough for this kind of work.
Reply:I found some other threads that address this at least for stick welding and I believe that OFW welding would introduce too much heat in the casting and cause it to crack anyway so I will either try to TIG weld it or use nickel rod.
Reply:You want a preheat on cast iron, or it will almost certainly crack after the fact. For stick, a high nickel rod is optimal, although I've also done it with 309L, and even 7018 in a pinch.
Reply:Mig it with SS, would be the easiest. JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases. There all here. : |
