I am having trouble running overhead passes w/ FCAW at work.  I am using NR 232 .072 wire and the machine is set at about 26 V.  There is something wrong with the adjustment on the machine so I cannot turn it down. The weldors say that 26 V. is good so that shouldn't be the problem.  The trouble that I'm having is that the weld metal falls out leaving a big hole and sometimes a drip.  Should I be oscilating or just dragging the puddle.
Reply:What is the wire speed?I can't run that stuff ... ...Yet.Here is the guide.  It doesn't go up to 26 volts for .072.http://content.lincolnelectric.com/p...ure/c32000.pdfDavidLast edited by David R; 01-02-2009 at 09:42 PM.Real world weldin.  When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Being that it is a T-8 wire, you really want to keep it at approx 200-250 amps or you will lose a lot of the important properties in the finished weld metal.  I would start with the lowest advised manufacturere settings and go from there for overhead.  You won't get anything but burned trying to weld that stuff overhead at 26 volts.
Reply:i use e71t hobart   5/32 wire and i usually run about 21-22 volts an d adjust speed accordingly

Reply:I,ll agree with Fat Bastard,Get another machine.
Reply:I used another machine today ,that did not have adjustment issues, and was able to do some decent welds. I had the machine set around 23 V. and that seemed to fix my problem with the overhead. I still have a question about large welds , in all positions. With the NR 232 am I better off running stringers instead of trying to wash it.
Reply:232 is its own beast.  Overhead i tend to run kind of a jiggle.  Its not a stringer, but its not a weave.  Watch the puddle and it should run similar to flat.  Not sure how much experience you have but if you havent learned to run vertical up yet, then do so now. it will make everything else cake work.If you cant adjust your machine by what you observe in the puddle while welding yet, get yourself a clip on ammeter and measure out what your getting out of your whip, not your machine.  There will be a voltage through your leads to your actual arc.i run about 21V through the whip (machine setting will depend on length of leads) (i normally add 10 percent more voltage at the machine for every 100' of leads)  I like to run my wire at about 190-210 depending on conditions for .072 wire.hope it helps, post pics if you can, it helps to diagnose the problem

Reply:I might suggest you check your polarity and watch your stick out length, you might want to increase it slightly so it freezes a little more rapidly."Si Vis Pacem Para Bellum"Lincoln Idealarc 250 AC/DCMillermatic 251   Syncrowave 300   30A spoolgunLincoln MP210Hypertherm 45(2) LN 25(2) Lincoln Weldanpower 225 CV(4) SA200   1 short hood    SA250    SAM 400
Reply:i'm just learning how to weld with NR 232, and to me it's a lil harder to run then other Flux Wire. but once you get the hang of it the welds come out really nice. one things for sure is that it really deposits a lot of metal. i ran my test plates yesterday. 1" plates, V-Groove wth backing. i did my veritcal and my overhead at the same time, and finished in about 2 and half hours. i passed the visual, but i have to wait a few days to get the results of the bend test.
Reply:overhead is just upside down flat.    i run damn near the same settings flat as i do overhead.     26V is way to high.    stringers is easiest when doing overhead full pens with NR-232Vantage 500's LN-25's, VI-400's, cobramatics, Miller migs, synch 350 LX, Powcon inverters, XMT's, 250 Ton Acurrpress 12' brake, 1/4" 10' Atlantic shear,Koikie plasma table W/ esab plasmas. marvel & hyd-mech saws, pirrana & metal muncher punches.
