I am looking at working with some 4130 Alloy Steel tubing and I would like to know if enyone knows if its the same as like Mild Steel and would I use  ER70S-2 filler?thanksMillermatic 211 with 150 spool gunDynasty 350 Hypertherm powermax 30XP
Reply:No, it's not like MS.Yes, you can use 70S-2 or 80S-D2Anything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:Have worked many years with 4130 and 4140 and it needs to be post and pre heated to releave the stresses. with 40 points of carbon, they will crack without heat. You might want to read up some more on this before you weld it with anything other than 4130LN material.  John G.SMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:I'm not going to have this arguement with weldgault again so I'll just post this link;http://www.lincolnelectric.com/knowl...hrome-moly.aspAnything worth doing is worth doing RIGHT
Reply:If your doing a chassis or a cage pre and post heat is not needed..Just do it!...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
Reply:Im with zapster, every racing team I worked for just welded it up with ER80 or ER70 no pre or post heat.  It is not necessary for most applications.  But there is always someone that insists it has to be heated and welded with special rods.
Reply:Just imagine what a full chassis/cage would cost if you needed to heat every bar up.. I have "front halved" cars..I have "rear halved" cars..Added to cages..Taken out and replaced cages..Added tubes for upgrades..And not once heated anything up before hand..Totally unnessary ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.

Reply:Like Zapster says if you can park it on the ground, no need, but, BUT if you climbing into a airframe you might want to read the FAR 4313, 1a &2. you had better unless the aircraft is classed as expermintal then you can do pretty much what you want, because you are the liable one.MikeHH210Hobart Champ 10KLincoln Buzz BoxCampbell Hausfeld 115Victor JourneymanMilwaukee 14" Chop Saw7" Chop Saw4/12" horz band sawmetal benderother toys forthcoming.
Reply:Just for "clarification"..I am doing some welding on 4130 2 1/2" solid round stock..Welding them as journals to mild steel heads and I do indeed pre heat to 400 or so before hand.. But for tubing and cages..no need.. ...zap!I am not completely insane..Some parts are missing Professional Driver on a closed course....Do not attempt.Just because I'm a  dumbass don't mean that you can be too.So DON'T try any of this **** l do at home.
