whats the trick for oxy cutting? I try holding a steady hand to cut around the lines but still comes out all chewed up. I'm using a 0 tip on 1/4" plate. Please help!!!settings on gauges areAcytelen= 5oxy= 20
Reply:Nothing wrong with the tool I rest my hand or use a guide when ever I can. Lean up against something, kneel, what ever it takes to steady your self. The more you cut,the better you will be.David Real world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:I have the same setup, and the same problem. I did a little fiddling around with the settings on the regulators and it got much better. Still not as nice as I would LIKE to see, but about as good as I expect with my limited O/A experience. I pushed the oxy setting up around 30-35 I think and it seemed to help a lot. Also, your settings sound pretty good as compared with the manual that came with my torch, but do you have flashback arrestors installed? If so, they can require up to 25% more pressure on both sides according to my book.Contact me for any metal polishing needs you may have, my avatar is a pic of a standard, painted fire axe that I ground, sanded polished and buffed to a mirror finish.
Reply:Yea, theres flashback arrestors installed. I guess that means I gotta crank up the juice A bit more huh? And thanks!!
Reply:Run your ratios around 1-to-5 up to 1-to-7. So for the -0- tip (victor) I would be around 4 and 25 or 5 and 30ish. Not that big of a deal. Everybody has there own methods. Get a heavy glove on the left hand and get it in there as a steady rest. That's why they are so heavy.. When you feel the glove wrinkle up and you can't get it off quick enough-------------then you were in too close.
Reply:Remember the oxygen does the cutting. Too much heat Just makes a mess.I agree with David, practice.Use a guide. Anything unsteadiness will show up in your cut. As Sandy points out you are probable within range. Are you using a neutral flame?
Reply:tap is correct, oxygen will make a mess, if using to much. JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases. There all here. :
Reply:properly setting up the flame will make a major differnce. proper set up is every thing. make sure the oxy valve on the bottle is wide open, it is high pressure and it has dual seats in the valve, you will get proper flow. Open the acetylene valve on the torch, and light the flame, adjust it so the smoke is nearly gone but not too much so the flame leaves your tip. then turn on the oxygen valve slowly until you van see the preheating cones, adjust them until they look fuzzy. then hit the oxygen lever and then re-adjust the flames untill they look fuzzy again, you know your tip is "sharp when you pull the oxt lever and there is a long oxy stream appears. then take the torch to the metal and preheat along the whole cut untill the moisture lifts from the plate. preheat the edge untill its cherry red and then hit the oxygen lever and begin to cut. hope i helped, if that wasnt too confusing.Nothing Ever Got Done By Quitting, Never Give Up.
Reply:I like a plasma cutter for up to about 1/4 inch, but for anything heavier I prefer the oxy-actylene...much more control. By watching the stream and feathering the oxygen, it's amazing how precise a torch is. Tip must be absolutely clean.
Reply:Try turning the torch into the cut, the thinner the plate the more inclination. May be a pain if you are trying to cut shapes. It's amazing how my Dad grows smarter as I grow older
Reply:I run my fuel at 15psi and my ox at 40. DO NOT RUN YOUR ACYTELEN ABOVE 15 PSI IT CAN EXPLODE. I always use a guide and angle into the cut about 10 to 15 degrees no more. Do not cut to slow if you are looking for a big cut as you go you will have a mess. Cut as fast as the torch will cut. To gage this look at your sparks under the cut and keep them inline with the torch. I use a 0 for everything I do not have time to change for every cut like I did in high school. Also like said before the ox does the cutting to a point. If you are in clean metal this is true if you are in gusted metal or painted you need a pre heat flame to keep the process going. Try gas welding sometime and when you get your puddle turn off the fuel and just use ox with practice you can weld a very nice beed with ox alone. Steel Thunder Welding LLC.
