Was glad to get this one completed.  700 lbs of steel, I can't remember how many grinding flap disks, a half a cylinder of gas, miles of mig wire, and lots of sweat equity.  Made it for a buddy who is starting up a machine shop.  I'll start with the photo of the final product and run you through the process.  Hope this might be of interest to you gents.  To Be continued........

Reply:Nice work on the rack!  I'm guessing the large open space opposite the shelf side is for storing sheetmetal standing on edge?Nice job on the threaded holes for the casters in the thick plate, looks like alot of time and careful measuring.   I would have just welded the casters to the tubes.  MM350P/Python/Q300MM175/Q300DialarcHFHTP MIG200PowCon300SMHypertherm380ThermalArc185Purox oaF350CrewCab4x4LoadNGo utilitybedBobcat250XMT304/Optima/SpoolmaticSuitcase12RC/Q300Suitcase8RC/Q400Passport/Q300Smith op

Reply:Wow,That is one 'Kick-***' RACK !  Simply impressive....I'm a complete 'DOLT' when it comes to fabrication, so can I ask you what the trick is to make sure that everything stays 'FLAT and SQUARE' when welding ?  Do the clamps do the trick, or does one have to ensure that you weld certain Areas First ?BTW, Beautiful creatures you have there....  I have 3 myself !Cheers,/Jman...

Reply:nice job on the rack i know what you mean on being glad to get the project done i just recently had to make a rack really close to the same design but with pipe. For the paint i would just clear coat it why cover up some.thing that nicelife is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, totally worn out, and louldy proclaiming."WOW, What a ride"

I also built the A-frame ends then clamped straight edges across and welded all the support arms on the inner portions that way things stay somewhat straight. DesertRider33--the large open space is as you guessed, it is to hold plate and sheet up to 48" in height by 60" in length.  Bolted the casters for two reasons: first it was going to get sand blasted and powder coated and secondly, if they go Tango Uniform they can be replaced easier.

Reply:That's a darn sight nicer looking than the primitive lookin' thing I built a while back. You'd be surprised at the strength of the tubing shelves.  I got a load of drill pipe delivered yesterday.  2 3/8 32' joints.  5 joints were on the truck rack resting on only 2 2x2 pieces of tubing identical to your setup. 6 were on the other side resting on the same kind of setup.  And that's weight moving on rough road.  Steel is tough stuff.Unless the icecream had M&M sprinkles, it could be classified as animal abuse"Any day above ground is a good day"http://www.farmersamm.com/
