okay, so i'm looking at buying this house... i found out last night that it is already wired with 220 out in the garage... i was planning on doing it anyway, if it didn't come with it, but since it did, i can use that extra cash and buy a new toy... i'm looking at something similar to a MM251 or a descent TIG machine... i already have an LE 100HD, so i already have a machine capable of doing what i want within the MIG department, so i'm leaning more towards a TIG... possibly used, but more than likely new. there aren't many used ones available in my area on craigslist, and i don't know what my LWS woudl want for one. i honestly don;t know what exactly i am looking for at this point. i don't INTEND on doing much more than 1/4", but never say never. i'd like to have the ability to do SS, Mild steel, Aluminum, and after a while (a LONG while) possibly start a little titanium if i ever get the chance. i woudl probably also be doing some copper and brass/bronze work as art pieces after i got used to the machine.Like i said, i'm leaning more heavily towards a TIG due to the versatility and the fact that i already have a machine with MIG capabilities. no particular brand in mind, just no cheap chinese stuff. i want something that will last me quite a while. thanks for the tips.Later,Andy
Reply:Ok, the most important questions...What is your budget and what are you planning to weld or would you like to be able to weld?Build a Barstool Racer at BarFlyRacers.com!
Reply:Your best bet would be to buy a multi-process power source, then buy the add on MIG and TIG. Cheaper and you get more equipment for the money.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:i'm planning on mostly doing relatively small stuff... the way things are going now, i'l be making grills for about 75-90% of the time, but i can do it all with my LE 100HD pretty easily. the most i plan on EVER having to do would be 1", but i have no problems with doing multiple passes. Mild steel usually, possibly an aluminum job here or there... Stainless somewhere in there... most likely 304/304L or 316/316L...as far as a budget, i'd like to stay around 2K if possible, but if i can get a justifiable reason for going higher, i probably could work it into my budget... there is a chance that before i buy it, i will have my own "handyman" side business... welding would be a prat of this, as well as home improvements etc., but i'm not sure yet. if i do, i could easily justify a much larger machine due to the fact that i can make a tax write-off from it.Micro, i looked at the multi-task machines but had no idea where to start as far as options that would be helpful... do you have any good suggestions? i'll be on AIM the rest of the night. Thanks guys.Later,Andy
Reply:i have mentioned before about the econotig by miller..  true one could arguably not use it for 1/4 aluminum because of the output;however, from folks I hear that have them swear by them as a good all around fair budget machineYeah and like Micro said a multiprocess is the way to go then build on to it. weld it like you own it
