Hi, I'm new to the forum and am currently taking a welding class. I've been in it since September, stick welding, but we just started MIG welding. This is my first try. It's a butt, lap and t joint so let me know how good or bad they are. Any constructive criticism or tips would be appreciated. Thanks, Andy Attached Images
Reply:oh yeah i almost forgot, the settings were 270 wire speed, 19.4 volts on 1/8 in. mild steel. .035 wire and 75/25.
Reply:MIG doesn't like mill scale so grind your metal first. Looks like you're also getting a fair amount of spatter, maybe turn down the voltage a bit to 18.5V (also wire speed)?XMT304 (school)SP125+ (home)HF 4x6 BandsawGood judgement comes from experience and much of that comes from bad judgement.
Reply:It's hard to tell with the angle/zoom, but they look like they might be a little cold at the start of the welds. otherwise, good travel speed and consistant width. The splatter should go away some if you get rid of the millscale. Mig = Shiny metal for welding every time. grinding disk or flappy paddle disk. Wire wheel just polishes the scale. The flappy paddle will give you a nicer surface. fewer deep groves in the metal.Practice Practice Practice. There are no problems. There are only solutions. Reply:The weld to the right looks like you went too fast. Not enough heat into the metal. Try turning down the volts to get rid of the spatter. It should not be there.Nice other wise.DavidReal world weldin. When I grow up I want to be a tig weldor.
Reply:Flap disks are the **** FYI. They make short work of most anything, depending on the grit.JoeMiller 140 Autoset (2010)Miller Syncrowave 250 (1996) |
