@ 25 Years ago i did a year in a training school in the UK on welding (YTS or somthing likr that)We did  6g in stick and innershieldI cant remember what rods we used....All i can bit together is:2.5 Murex Ferrox for the rootthen Oerlikon tenicita 3.25 for the hot pass a, fill and cap.we had to change polarity from the root to the rest also.I very might have remembered this wrongly or mixed things up.Can anyone tell me what type of rods I was using (E7018 rings a bell)Info on both would be greatG
Reply:You can use E6010 or E6011 or E6013 or E7018, typically.City of L.A. Structural; Manual & Semi-Automatic;"Surely there is a mine for silver, and a place where gold is refined. Iron is taken from the earth, and copper is smelted from ore."Job 28:1,2Lincoln, Miller, Victor & ISV BibleDanny
Reply:Thanks, but i was keen to find out exactly what we were using thenI thought the 7018  was for the root in 2.5mm, but it was a long time ago. That leaves me puzzled to what the 3.25 was? It was for a proper Lloyd's 6g test.  G
Reply:It most likely was 6010 for the root pass and 7018 for the fill and cap.  John G.SMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:Agreed 7018 over 6010 world wide standard. 6011's are easyer for a root pass, but becarful you do not get as much penitration. Steel Thunder Welding LLC. Reply:Yes I thought that we used 2.5 E7018 for the root, but it was a long time ago. they were light in color. The filler rods were more brown. must have been 6010.All a long time agoG
Reply:A 6010 depending on brand will be dark grey light grey or red. Not brown. 7014's are brownish and some 7024's are brown. I just dont see a school telling you to do a root in 7018 and a cap of 6010. The rods just simply are not desined for that. A 6010 welds kinda crapy, but it will give outstanding penitration with some strength. The 7018 gives a very good weld with moderate penitration and very good strength. Welding to code as in pipe structural or ship hull building / repair calls for a root of 6010 with a cap of 7018. Steel Thunder Welding LLC. Reply:Btw 2.5 is the diamiter and that is probably a 3/32" rod and the 3.35 I would guess to be a 5/32" rod. I usually use those sizes myself for root and cap infact that is all I cary in my truck unless im doing something special like thin galvanized or something simular. Then I use 3/32" 6011 or 1/8" 6011. Steel Thunder Welding LLC. Reply:Thanks for the replies. Can anyone make any sence of the chamging of polarity we did from root to the hot pass and fill?...suppose thats what all the welding notes were ll about then.... G
Reply:Well some rods are dcep dcen or ac or a combo of them. So if you run one type than switch there you go. Also back in the day (not as much now with better rods) people would run one way to get penitration and then reverse to get a shallow wide weld. I do it on thin stuff with 6011 but they done weld very good, but if it is thin you got to do what you got to do. Steel Thunder Welding LLC.
