I have been practicing welding 4 in. pipe together and I think I am ready to get certified. I have been doing a root pass with 6010 and a cover pass with 7018. To get certified I have to weld 2 pieces of 2 in. together while both pieces are held at 45 degrees off the ground. I was just womdering if I should use two root passes with 6010 or stich with just one. The certification test costs $160, so I don't want to have to take the test too many times. Your opinions are always valued. Thanks for your time. -Jake
Reply:Post up some pics of your test pieces. It sounds like your materials list is correct.John -  fabricator extraordinaire, car nut!-  bleeding Miller blue! http://www.weldfabzone.com
Reply:x2.  And are you welding 2" together for a reason?  Once you go under a particular diameter pipe, your cert will only cover that size.
Reply:Surley he means 2 - 2" pieses of 4" pipe.  JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :

Reply:I would think a standard pipe procedure would be in order.  6010 root and hot pass and 7018 fill and cap,  any comments.    JohnSMAW,GMAW,FCAW,GTAW,SAW,PAC/PAW/OFCand Shielding Gases.  There all here. :
Reply:When I did my pwp 7 pipe test it was schd 40 6" and a 2"  in the 6g position. I remember doing the 2" with a 1/8" 6010 root and 6010 hot pass followed by a 3/32 7018 cap. No fill needed. Just make sure you leave a bit of witness after your hot pass, so you'll need to travel fast and hot.
Reply:I dont understand what a hot pass is I am new to this. A friend of mine welds pipe and is helping me get certified. That way I can help him when they get busy. Also you told me to leave a witness, I don't know what that is either. Thanks for all the responses. I will post pics tomorrow. -JakeLincoln Weldanpower 225 G7
Reply:I got a book from my locall public library called pipe welding procedures. It was really good.Hope this helps.Good luck
Reply:After you lay in the root, grind it down a bit to remove defects, wagon tracks. Crank up heat 10, 15,  20 amps and lay in a hot pass. This will burn out defects and wagon tracks. Hmmm the witness. When you are filling the pipe with your fill pass you dont want to fill all the way flush with outside dia. leave about 1/16 lip or so. That lip is call the witness.I agree with welderman1 about the pipewelding procedures book. If you are learning pipe welding this book is great. Lots of pics and info about stick, tig and metallurgy. The only thing I dont like about it is they talk about whipping the root. It is much better to just drag the rod along the gap.
Reply:Thanks for all the help. I have found a book on the subject. The book tells me to lay the root pass uphill with 6010. I have always been going downhill. What way should I do it?Lincoln Weldanpower 225 G7
