I know before I start it this is going to give me grief.I need to weld some 45mm square tube (3mm wall) to some 6mm plate. The tube will be perpendicular to the plate i.e. butted to it.With my stick welder. So what's the best way to do this?Scott
Reply:Maybe I'm missing something... What's the problem?
Reply:Are you worried about the plate warping?
Reply:If you have a d c stick machine , try 7018 3/32 and after you got it tacked , then back step it . should work fine .[SIZE="5"Yardbird"
Reply:cant see a problem here , but yeh i do it every day , tack it one corner , square it off tack opposites , then weld away too easy mate

Reply:weld the plate (thicker) to the tube (thin)start on the thicker and work puddle to the thinner
Reply:Watch the puddle! Watch the puddle!
Reply:It will also be a lot easier to have the plate on the bottom if you can... 3/32" 7018 will work nice.Me!
Reply:Thicker to thinner. Okay. The plate is vertical. And I'll be up a ladder. Oh well.

Reply:gday scott , go with what everyone else has said start arc on thick work over thin than back and forth between em and ull work it out , Clothiers Creek is a small valley in Australia right on the border of new south wales and queensland .
Reply:where bouts in sydney r ya from mate??
Reply:Watch your arc length. Keep the arc short, about 3/32" with 3/32 electrode. Too long an arc will raise the heat and increase your chances of burning through.
