Ok ill start out by saying i am a new welder and do not feel comfortable doing the final welding and have a friend that owns a machine shop that will teach and do it with me. He is very busy and i will build the frame tack it all together put it on another trailer and take it to him. It will be a 5x10. I have most of the materials laying around so this will be a budget build. I got a 2000lb axle and fenders for 5 dollars i tore it down and it is in good condition. I want to build the frame and tongue out 3in 3/16 c channel. I have alot of 4x4 angle that is 1/4 thick that i would like to use for cross members. My question is will the 3in channel be stout enough for the frame with out a upper rail, i dont want one so i can load a four wheeler sideways. This is a purpose built trailer to haul my quad with the plow on and some light stuff like 2x4s and around the house stuff so over loading is a non issue 1500lbs max.
Reply:Your materials are a little more stout than needed. You might consider a heavier axle to compliment the heavy frame. My name's not Jim....
Reply:all the materials were 15 bucks including the axle. i may up grade later but right now this will fit the bill i hope. so you dont think i need to add a upper rail for more stiffness
Reply:not if you build it right. go with an A-frame type tongue and wrap it around the sides back to the axle to keep twisting to a minimum. That 4x4 1/4" angle is definately overkill for crossmembers. You might want to set it aside for a future project and go pick up a length or two of 2x2 1/4" or 2 1/2x 2 1/2 3/16" from your local steel supplier instead. It's cheap. It would be cheaper than a length of the heavy stuff if you need it in the future anyway. My name's not Jim....
Reply:ill look into it thanks i was just kinda hoping to get this angle out of my way in the garage. Thanks for the reply
